New ES2 owner looking for spares + advice

I would have thought the usual suspects, Mike. NOC Shop (if there's no rush); RGM Motors, Andover Norton and (if you have to) Norvil. All found easily with a web search.

No probs, Mike. You could of course just Google "Norton spares" then jump over all the computer software/security bits and see what you can find. There are quite a few out there. It's usually a case of finding one that has what you want. None of them has everything.

I have also recently acquired a 1948 ES2. Getting hold of spare parts is a bit tricky for pre-1953 versions of this bike and harder still for those with the earlier gearboxes. As george says, you may have to check out various sources.

I found the best two for fittings and cablesto be Andy Molnar and Norvil. JJ Cables are also worth checking out just for cables.

276 AU carb spares are available from the likes of Hitchcock and Burlen.

Many parts were common with other models such as the 16H, 18, 19 and early Dominator twins.

I too am rebuilding an old Norton (ES2 1960) and found a "Spare Parts List" I purchased from the national Motorcycle Museum was invaluable. (www.nationalmotorcyclemuseum.co.uk/shop/) In 'Search the Shop' type in "Norton Spare parts"

You can then cross reference the Norton Parts number on such sites as RGM to order whats required. I've found the most helpful site is 'www.rgmnorton.co.uk' the most expedient and when contacting them by email by 'contact us' on their web site for more information on a specific part they respond with helpful advice. Here is what the owners manual says about the oil:

Ambient temp above 32 degree F use SAE 20/50 or straight SAE 30 oil

Ambient temp below 32 degree F use SAE 10/30 or SAE 20 oil.

It all depends on where you live and the temperature you might be seeing.

Here in coastal Northern California where we might get down to freezing once or twice a year I use straight 50w non-detergent oil. I'm getting too old to ride when the temp gets down so the 50w seems to work just fine for me.
