I have my gearbox apart at the moment to deal with end float on the mainshaft and noticed that both the gear selector quadrant and the selector fork camplate have location indents for all four gears but nothing to locate neutral.. is this normal or do you just hunt for neutral by trail and error.TIA

Thanks for your input, I had the gearbox completely stripped today and it seems like the camplate does have 5 indents, it's just the foot change selector that only has 4 intents and no positive neutral position

Yes...you do need to feel…
Yes...you do need to feel the detent between 1 and 2. Otherwise you couldn't make a rapid sequence of gear changes all the way up and down the box. It's obvious when you think about it...but not perhaps quite as obvious when playing with one on the bench.

OK I had not thought about it in that way,lhad no gear indicator until now so hopefully things will improve, with a dragging clutch finding neutral has always been a pain, just waiting now for shims to deal with the endplay on the main shift,then hopefully back riding again

Nobody picked this up. The circular cam plate should have five notches for the detent. Four are pretty much equally spaced and the neutral is the fifth, midway between 1 and 2. All the suppliers list them. RGM and no doubt others show clear illustrations on their web sites.
