My Norton project

Forums

A few people have asked me how I am coming along with the Norton project, so I thought I would take some pictures today, and give a little update...

As of now I am still pulling parts together, to build the motor, I now have a most of the bottom end, plus a barrel, and a 350cc head, that has been machined to fit a 500, I have rockers and rocker cover, oil pump (x3), cams, etc, although I would like to find some late model 16H cams, for my bike, but they are proving hard to find. The gearbox has been rebuilt, so is ready to fit, rear wheel is away to be built, still looking for a front hub, so as you can see I am getting there slowly, but then no one said it was a race. :bigt

Thanks Dave, I seem to have hit a wall at the moment, and the project has stalled, rear wheel is away being built, but I am having no luck finding engine parts, I wonder if Shepton will turn something up.

Time for an update, for those who may be interested....

not having a shop at the house, it can be hard to find the motivation to go to the lockup some days. And it seems every time you make a little progress, you also take a few steps in reverse. As like today. The recent motor I bought, although it was a good deal, and is all there, it is not as good externally as it is internally. The cases are not a matched pair, and have a bit of damage, which is only to be expected, as it was built as a competition trials motor. there is sand and corrosion all over the motor, and blue Hermatite sealer everywhere else!So today I made the decision to pull the motor down, and rebuild it into my good matched pair cases. I am also going to sell off a couple of the parts to fund my engine work. My model 50 alloy head has gone off to be machined, it needs opening up to fit the 500 ES2 barrel, and I am having the carb inlet opened up from 25mm to 32mm so as to fit a 32mm Amal concentric, this should help it to breath a little better, and I am going to help in this area by fitting some hi lift cams too.Now the inside of the motor I bought, has all been lightened and polished, the rockers are all lightened, and it looks like the crank and rod have been worked on too. So I will be getting some new roller bearings fitted into my cases this week, and then look at transferring the internals over. The Barrel has already been rebored, and a new BSA B50 slipper piston fitted, this should give me a bore and stroke of 83x100 equating to 541cc.here is a good little displacement calculator... http://www.everything2stroke.com/content/36-Engine-Displacement-CalculatorSo I shall sell off the Wellworthy Al Fin 500 head, and matching rocker cover, and the money raised should pay for my head work, and new valves, or at least go someway to getting it all sorted. My frame is once again just a frame assembly, as that is going to the metal workers place, to have the alloy tank matched to the frame, my front brake plate and some other parts are off to the powder coaters to be blackened. Once the brake plate is back I can set to fitting the scoop I made up. I then need to drop some of the smaller parts I have found, off to a friend to get them zinc coated, maybe then, I can start to put it all back together again. And you can read everything about my project from day one, right here ... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=739420Kevin.

In case any of you are interested in my project... due to being a little under the weather of late, I have been unable to wave a spanner in any semblance of anger, so things down in the lock-up have all got a little dusty, not helped by the strong winds we have endured recently. But that being said, a little work has progressed on my Norton Clubman project, as you will see from the pictures below. overall I am really happy with how it is all progressing, sure I see things that I would change if I were doing it again, the front brake scoop is not quite how I would have liked it, but for a first go at this type of thing I am happy. The fuel tank looks like it is white, but that is just where the sun was reflecting off of the aluminium.

Thanks Anna, I shall drop you an email...

Working in my lockup is a lot harder than it might at first appear, I have no light or power, so can only work during daylight hours, which also means weekends only at this time of year, also, I could lose the lockup at any time, as there has been an application for the land to be built on!

So I have to plan every job before hand, and if it is something I can't do in my lockup, then I have to strip the bike down, so that it will fit in my work van, and take it somewhere else to be sorted, then I have to strip it down again to bring back here... and if I lose the lockup, then it all comes back into my kitchen, where it has spent time before...
