Mudguard transfers

Forums

Can someone tell me which transfer was originally on the rear mudguard of early 1950'sES2 Nortons. The parts book lists it as a A2/869, Ihave foundseveraltransfers fromdifferentsupplierslisted as beingfor the rear guard, but the sizes and script are not the same andnothing is specific.

Hi Paul,

no way for me to confirm this is true, but I found this auction ad:

Mathewsons Auction Entry ** 100 + ENTRIES ** October 25th For Sale by Auction (1950)

1950's Norton ES2 PROBABLY UNREPEATABLEâ?..Never registered Norton ES2. The Vendor informs us that this bike spent many years in the loft of a traditional family owned motorbike shop until the loss of one of the then elderly owners. E.W.Burnett & Sons were established in 1886 ! And were agents for Norton, Triumph, Velocette, Francis-Barnett, Excelsior Motor-Cycles as well as agent for Watsonisn & Swallow Sidecars. Purchased from the shop before its unfortunate closure in 1996 by the current owner. This is a chance to own what the vendor describes as 'basically a new Norton' The tyres still carry their original âhairsâ the string is still attached to the rear mudguard and the speedometer reads just over 10 miles! One or two items have been 'borrowed' by the original shop owners during its many years in storage, something we can all be guilty of when operating a business, always with the intention of replacement 'next week'! Fortunately nothing major. An example being a foot peg which springs to mind. Accompanying the motorbike are the following. Carriage receipt (From the string on the rear mudguard) Clearly showing the dealers details. Norton factory postcard for instruction booklet application Lucas âDry charged batteryâ toggle Tyre Manual RAC booklet for Motor Cyclist Business reply envelope to the Royal Automobile Club London. A true time warp. Guide £10,000~£15,000 Our next Auction will take place on Saturday August 30th. Hope to see you there. Please âLog Ontoâ Mathewsonâs website for a list of vehicles to be offered by Auction. Thereâs something for everybody! www.mathewsons.co.uk Memorabilia will be starting at 10.00am followed as usual by motor vehicles at approximately 1:00pm. Thanks Skip, from what I have found, thattransfer is from around 1954 (approx). I think the one I am trying to establish for around 1951is scripted 'NORTON', anda possible patent number beneath. Also the size I amnot sure of.

Yep, thanks Mike, that site was one of those that I was looking at, but they don't say which transfer goes where or for what year. But, I pressume it would be the #6335.

A2/869 also appears in my 1955 model 7 parts book, i was told in the heavy twins section that it was the " model 7" transfer for the rear guard but if it also features in a ES2 parts book I would sugestthat is not the case

So, based on the RacingNorton site, this would be correct?

It's my best guess! They definitely had a logo on the mudguard and there's no other transfer for the rear mudguard listed.

Cheers,

Ian.

Hello these Norton logos are the present Norton motorcycle ones and Not Bracebridge street logos I have them made to Bracebridge street designs yours Anna J

They are similar to, but not thesame as the present logo on the Norton website. Looking through period literature published by Bracebridge Street one can find several variations of the logo. The photo of the Queen visiting the works in 53 shows a banner with a similar logo to the transfers although more widely spaced. The mudguard transfers are not supposed to be the same as those on the tank.

Ian.

Hi Anna - you sound very confident. But the script changed many times over the years and the Classic Transfer graphics (if reasonably accurate) for this (6334) is closest to the 1929 transfer (6327) than any other. What design do you have?Almost all old photos I have are from the sides or the front quarters. Have you any original information? Or a good photo of the rear mudguard of a bike from the '30s to the early '50s before the square transfers appeared?

Hi.

Just to confirm that this script was used back in the fifties, the are 3 period photo's in Mick Woollett's book 'Norton' showing this script on the oil tanks of the 53 & 54 works' racers (pages 245, 247 & 249).

Ian.

Thanks for the effort to all who have researched an answer for me. Now, just a flow on question!...For my 1951,was this transfer attached on the guardbelow the number plate, as per Richards pre war photo or on top of guardabove the tail light and below the pillion 'bum pad' as in Skips late '50's photo?

Regards,

Paul
