Model 18 Gearbox Oil and valve lubrication

Forums

Hi everyone,

I've recently bought a norton model 18 from 1929. Since I have no experience with a motorcycle this old, I have some questions that I hope you can help me with :-)

1. Gearbox oil:

How can I see what the max level of oil is? I didn't find a level indicator or anything in the manual. I don't want the oil to spill into the clutch.

2. Open valves

This model has open valves that have to be lubricated. Can anyone with some experience in that area please give some advice on how often, which oil, ... -> the basics. A link where I can read it up myself would also be appreciated.

Thank you very much :-)

Hi Ralf,

If you check Simon Grigson's. Vintagenorton.com website you can get the operating manual and parts book.

The gearbox would have been filled with semi fluid grease.

Good luck. They are great bikes to ride.

I use monograde SAE40, the same as in the engine, to lubricate the valves. How often depends on conditions but I do it every time I use the bike and then keep an eye on them. Better to put up with a bit of oil spraying around than run dry.

My gearbox is sealed with no drain plug. The grease should stay in between services.

I use Penrite semifluid grease in my Burman BAP box. Keeps the gearbox almost tight. The Vincent rider's handbook says that about 1/4 pint grease or oil should be added every 2000 miles.

Hi Ralf.

In my 1930 model 20 I use OO grade semi fluid grease in the Sturmey Archer box. I warm it through in a pan to help it go in.

For valve lubrication I give them a blast of aerosol chain lube before each ride and another blast into the lube hole once the engine is running. I'm not sure this is best practice, maybe others can advise?

I use semi fluid grease in my sturmey archer box. I buy it from vin and vet. They will post or you can buy it direct from their stall at various events like Banbury, Stafford etc.
