Finally at the point where I am ready to fire up my 1934 Inter. However, whilst turning the engine over there's a metallic 'clunk' coming from the engine. Closer inspectionand I think we know what it is.
As the cam goes over center the valve spring and rocker is pushing the camshaft round to take up the backlash in the bevels in the oposite direction to when the valve is opening. I am fairly confident I have the correct amount of backlash in the bevel gears so am not sure what I can do to stop it. Once I have some oil being pumped up there I suspect it will be less noisy but I'm still a little concerned by the noise.
Neither my Dad or I have any experience with OHC engines so we don't know if this is normal? Can anyone comment on if this is normal, or if not - what can I do about it and if anyone has any suggestions as to what else this could be I'm keen to hear them!
Any help will be great
Andy

I contacted Barry Strickla…
I contacted Barry Strickland and he said its not entirely uncommon and nothing to worry about. The noise isn't there at running revs. I think the oil being pumped into the bevels is also helping reduce it.

Is your noise sorted now you've shown us the bike ready for the road? We turned a 1932 Inter over on the kick start the other day and there wasn't any such noise - but it might be gummed uo with last year's Castrol R...
