Hello to all - I am helping a friend to rebuild a rigid framed 500cc single and he has a problem with mounting the mag/dyno unit. The tray that supports the unit is alloy and fastens with four large countersunk headed screws into the magneto base. This platform then fits neatly into the space between the engine/gearbox plates. There are two vertical mounting holes in lugs at the base of the support platform. Does any one know the dimensions of the studs/bolts that will secure the platform, please ? Also any idea who can supply these components ? Regards, Howard

howard.
the alloy plate are still available from norvil about £45.
i bought one only two weeks ago from russel motors in london.
i also bought the four countersunk screws and washers.
the plate sits on the rear engine plates with a bolt going from the timing side through the engine plates and a nut on the other end just inside the primary chaincase. in the other hole fits a fixing bolt 5/8 inch and the alloy is threaded.you tighten both bolts once the chain has been adjusted.
howard.
the lower of the two bolts is 5/16ths not 5/8. as i suggested earlyer.
hope this helps...

Thanks for that Anthony -…
Thanks for that Anthony - That all makes sense from what he's got. The guy that rebuilt the motor had all the parts but when he returned it the mag/dyno was separate and the fixings bolts were missing. Do you know what the thread is in the threaded female part and is the long fixing a bolt with a nut or a stud with two nuts ? Many thanks, Howard

You haven't detailed which year the bike is but it would seem likely that the dimensions of the fasteners remained unchanged during the later 1930s to the end of the 1940s at least.
The WD parts books are very useful as in general the fasteners are dimensioned. Norton weren't very consistent in the sequence of dimensions and they persisted in referring to bolts or screws as 'pins' but the information is mostly there.
This is the long one :-
7/16" x 4 7/32" x 20tpi

I'm struggling with the attachments here.
This is the short bolt :-
5/16" x 11/16" x 26tpi

Thanks Richard. Does one assume that the length quoted is from under the bolt head or overall length ? I assume a nut and washer go with the long bolt whilst the short 'pin' screws into the alloy platform ? I now know the thread size and form so I should be able to order them plus or minus the head depth. Thanks again, Howard

Just another thought Richard/Anthony/Anybody in the second attachment you included I am happy that the part number 9090 - defined as the locking plate pin is the hex-headed set-screw but then what is part number 9089 - defined as locking plate ? Thanks , Howard

Hi Howard, Attached a phot…
Hi Howard,
Attached a photograph showing the magdyno area. You can see just below the magneto base the tear drop shaped locking plate.
Hope this help. Anyways, if you need dimensions, please don?t hesitate to ask me.
