Looking for a piece of frame tubing 57â 19S (ES2)

I know this is a long shot,

I am restoring a 57â 19S

There is a nasty repair to a frame tube just above the brake pedal pivot, and the pivot casting is also damaged

I think I could have a piece of tubing spliced in, with a sleeve inside

It would be very helpful to have a piece of original tubing so the inside and outside diameters matched

The outside diameter of the tube is about 25.75mm (1.02â) and a piece at least 3â long would be needed

Thanks

Mark,

This breakage is common when the single downtube frames have had a sidecar fitted. If you want to fit a sidecar to these frames you must have an extra i.e. 4th sidecar fixing to take the strain off this rear footrest mounting.

I may have a Matchless frame which could have the same size tube, will have a look tomorrow afterrnoon.

Regards

Philip.

Hi Philip,

Thanks ! that would be great, I think it would be very helpful

This bike has some real + and - 's

It sat in a garage unused for over 40 years, but a lot of poor repairs etc. in the first 13 years of its life

I would be a little surprised if it had a side car, but no way to know

Mark,

I had a look for a piece of tube for you, but unfortunately cannot help.

Since reynolds made the tubing for motorcycle frames including norton and since reynolds belonged to TI the parent company of Raleigh industries, why not pop down to your council recycling center, no pun intended, with a pair of calipers and see what you can find ?

Hello Mark. Sorry, but I just spotted your post. Some years ago my sidecar broke the frame on my Model 77. I believe the frames are the same and thebrake was probably in the same place as yours. After a lot of 'sucking of teeth' by modern metal workers I eventually got it fixed properly by a local Blacksmith who informed me at the time that the tubing he was using was 'gun barrel'. It was the right diameter, but had a thicker wall, therefore stronger. He also brazed a strengthening bar into the frame that can't be seen by the casual observer. I'm afraid that that is about as much as I can tell you, but gun barrel tubing might be one line of inquiry you could take.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the suggestion, most likely I will find something close and have it turned to size

1" diameter 'gun barrel' seems pretty large, maybe like a flintlock?

Greetings from South Australia, too bloody hot in the shed, so came in for a drink. Try looking for "Seamless Mechanical Tube" it's cold drawn, in the UK one source may be:

http://www.steelexpress.co.uk/structuralsteel/seamless-tubes-CDS1.html

Looking at the listing for 25.4 mm (1 inch!) there are heaps of wall thicknesses & hope they can help you with a "Sample?" if not you may have to cross their palm with beer vouchers.

Good luck & regards Steve
