Long Roadholders bottoming out

Model 19 rigid.

New bushes, steering head bearings fitted. 150mm of thick oil in each slider, but there is still a banging over even small bumps and it's worse going downhill or with the front brake on.

i can see by watching the forks that all of the travel is being used until the forks clank.

The bike used to have a big sidecar on. Do you think this may have reduced the springs ability to withstand compression?

Do springs get less effective with age? (they may be 60 years old by now)

Or is it that I have eaten to many pies? (I am a big lad)

What do you guys think to me trying new springs (Norvile or RGM), or putting say 20mm of home made preload on each spring?

Hi.

As you say, after 60 years your springs will be getting a bit tired. LongRoadholders' stanchions are only a fraction of an inch longer than Commando ones. It is possible to fit Commando stanchions and internals - springs (RGM multirate???) and dampers - into long roadholders. The only trouble is the damper rod having UNF threads but as the damper tubes are longer. It could be that earlier short roadholder's rods will fit - perhaps someone else could advise. I've used Commando damper internals with early damper rods in my Manx but have yet to try them out.

Your alternative route using new (external?) springs a sounds feasible too.

Incidentally, I use RGM's multi rate springs in my ES2 (1960) with 15W oil and find them really good.
