Long Roadholders

Forums

I'm going to strip the long roadholders on my ES2 in the not to distant future. I suspect I may want to fit new bushes and will certainly fit new oil seals. Are these parts interchangeable between the long and short roadholders? I have read that 'lots of parts are interchangeable' but does anybody have a diffinitive list of what is?

Hi Andy, I have rebuilt both types, the bushes and seals are interchangeable, as are the oil drain screws.

Everything else, sliders, dampers, springs, stanchions and oil seal retaining screws / bottom covers (integral on short roadholders) are unique to each variant. The fork top nuts from a set of shorties will also fit long fork stanchions, although they are slightly different as they have an extra threaded hole inside for the short fork damper rods. You wouldn't see this when they are fitted to your long forks.

Rebiulding the forks is a pretty easy job unless the sliders have excessive wear, which is pretty rare as all the moving parts sit in an oil bath, and all of the new parts together will cost much less than people are currently asking for rebuilt forks at jumbles and on ebay!

Thanks Paul. Just what I was after. I've also come across a Lansdowne Damper Cartridge. Various reviews I have seen look very good so I am considering it as I plan to use this bike for rallies on the continent so could be doing a lot of miles on it. And if the transform the forks like people say, it will be worth it. Anybody got any experience with these?
