kickstart pawl fitting.

Forums

In the past I have fitted the pawl with the rounded edge uppermost and it soon wore off the edge and slipped, Then worked fine after I reversed it.  I am working on a friends 650 and have replaced a slipping pawl for him which was the same.  Looking at the OLD BRITS site there is a good picture of the supposedly correct fitting and it has the rounded edge engaged with the gear. Who has it right??, And if I have it wrong why is it still working 4 years later!, This box also had the lay 4th gear in back to front (someone using a Haynes manual!).

After spending some time looking at pawls and gears ,its apparent that the inside of the layshaft first gear (28t) wears a fair bit ,particularly if the kickstart fouls the back of the riders leg and is held in contact during riding.Or if the bush/bearing is poor and the k/s moves back when accelerating. Its possible that an upside down pawl works better with a worn gear!.Pawls appear to be made with various shaped business ends. Some appear to be symmetrical (no up or down). Do we have a pawl guru in the ranks?, Or will that be me?!.

You are now the official NOC expert on kick start pawls!  No doubt you will now receive your own NOC email address!

All I know is what I read - the Neill book (page 124) has quite good drawings which do show the sharp edge outermost (I needed a magnifying glass...).  But Haynes (page 94)  does say that the first gear pinion might need to be replaced with the pawl if the kick start begins to slip.

I don't have a Niell book , so its interesting that it shows the sharp edge outermost (the action bit!) ,that's exactly the opposite to what the well respected OLD BRITTS site shows.Simple logic would seem to be that if something is going to be dragged across gear teeth it should start off rounded. But that does not fit well or work in the two boxes I have been working on.  My logic says its only a bloody kickstart and if it works well it MUST be right.  Would be nice if we could get Mick Hemmings to chip in now and then, but  he would be doing himself out of a job!!. If anyone thinks my brain is worth picking ,they need to get in fast.

When I get a moment I’ll look ar Micks video and see what that says, I’ve got to put that gearbox together anyway, before I forget how it all goes together and I have a new pawl to fit
