International Oldham coupling

Forums

Would any kind person out there have for sale a good vertical shaft oldham coupling for an International? Preferably the standard 1/8" thick one, but I can work witheither the3/16" or 1/4"oversize ones.

This is the last remaining part I need for a painstaking restoration of a 1938 CS1 (must have run into thousands of cups of tea!), one of my original couplings has quite a bit of wear in it.

Thanks in anticipation.

Roger.

I have read somewhere that the shaft can be re-made from silver steel if you need to. I would guess that the Oldham coupling would be made from the same material? I'll see if I can find where I read it and hopefully be a bit more helpful.

Have you tried Stu Rogers?

Thanks for that Andy. I didsee somewherea mentionof silver steel for the shaft, and i'm sure itwas without the couplings i.e. the shaft had male ends straight into the bevel gears.

Stu Rogershas madecouplings in the past, If i can't find any original ones I will ask him.

Found it in Mitchell Barnes' book 'Building and Tuning the OHC long stroke norton engine'. It says:

'Andy Savage in the UK suggests that should you need to have a new vertical shaft made, silver steel is fine and that they can be machined as 'males' thus dispensing with the Oldham couplings.'

This could be an option if you can't find the Oldham coupling?

Mitchell Barnes book is brilliant if you haven't already seen it, it's mostly a compilation of other people's work but it has a lot of very useful information all in one place.

Thats where I saw it! It is a useful book. Before I started this restoration I gathered up as much reading material as possible, including original Norton handbook, sales catalogue & parts list. Stu Rogers has supplied me withmost of the parts I have needed, and is brilliant on technical information.

Hi Andy

Any idea where I can get hold of said book, also any suggestions of good literature for 1949 Inter rebuild.

That bike I spoke to you about some time ago is slowly edging it way to me ,fingers crossed. Thanks Ian.

I got the book from eBay. It crops up quite regularly on there. E.M.Franks 'Norton' is also very good and covers all of the models.

It's also well worth getting a parts book. Shows all the parts you should have and I think for the post war models it shows them as exploded diagrams.

Thanks Ian. The engine is completely finished now, apart from I need to make the oil pipes up.

The gearbox is at the welders for the third time. I've bored out the bottom mounting and bushed it to make it a tight fit in the frame, I did the same on the frame before it was painted. But it seems that every time I pick it up something else cracks or breaks off. I am however about done with clamping it down on the mill and machining bits out/pressing bushes in. So I am hoping I am getting to the stage I can start putting it back together, all the internals look good but I want to give them another once over before it all goes back together.

Once the gearbox is in, its mostly down to things like clutch, chains etc and bolting on the last few bits. I'm into the last few months of my masters at the moment though so don't have a lot of time to spend on it, I'd like to see it on the road this summer though! I'll post some pictures when its finished.
