Import costs from Australia or NZ

Hi there,

Checking if anyone has experience or ball-park costs to import a bike from Australia or New Zealand?

Appreciate the feedback. Al

About 5 years ago I imported a Land Rover from NZ. Other than the shipping, you will have to pay import duty plus VAT. You will probably need an agent to handle the import paperwork - the shipping line should be able to do this. I used Wallenius Wilhemsen. Best contact them for a quote.http://www.2wglobal.com/services/portfolio/ocean-transportation/#.VUDYzJB0zX4. I can dig out more details if you are serious about this. Gordon.

Hi Gordon, thanks for the reply. Your post urged me to scour the net and ive located a handy import calculator which seems to provide accurate vat and duty costs, based upon the product price, shipping and insurance costs entered (and location).

For example;Product Value: £6000Shipping Costs: £1500 (just made this figure up for now)Insurance Costs: £200 (again drempt it up)

Total Customs Value: £7700Duty: £462Vat: £1632

Total import duty & taxes due:£2094.40Total landed cost:£9794.40

Higher than I expected so you would have to get a bike at a good price to work out worthwhile, tho.. my guesstmate of shipping and insurance costs may be well off.

Cheers, Al

It can get expensive, particularly importing from outside the EU. Shipping costs might not be so bad though - 5 years ago I paid £1700 for the Landie which included the shipping costs. My mistakewas not to get separate receipts for purchase and shipping. I was charged duty and VAT on the overall receipt, probably twice as much as I should have paid. Mind you, the customs guy as Southampton only charged £50 import duty, much less than the book figure so it wasn't all bad.

I brought a1936 CS1 Nortonback afewyears back. As I remember there is a reduction in VAT based on ageof vehicle (30 & 50 year) andcountry of origin (ifits comingbacktocountry of origin...) Digdeeper as I don't think it is asonerous as mentioned. I certainly wasn't put off by the overallcosts and although it was on the watersixweeks freight costs were very reasonable. Cheers
