Ignition timing

Forums

Several opinions have suggested setting the ignition timing to 28' btdc, due to the lower octane rating of modern fuels. What are the effects of retarding the timing on the engine? Ie can retarded timing do any damage? My bike is a '71, using a Boyer Mark 3,

If the timing is drastically retarded, the engine will run hot - even to the extent of the exhaust pipes glowing red. Power output out is reduced and fuel consumption increased. However, it has to be really drastic for that to happen. Over advanced ignition produces detonation which will destroy pistons. I have my Atlas (fitted with Commando pistons) timed to 28 degrees btdc. It seems perfectly happy.

Superunleaded fuels are available ranging from 97-99 octane; Tesco's Momentum 99 being good fuel, by all accounts, although your fuel system will need to be fully ethanol-proof..... It is often used by club racers. Alternatively, or even in conjuction with, one can use octane boosters.

Is it knocking now? If not, then maybe it could accept a bit more advance. Is it very high compression? As Gordon says - retarded ignition leads to overheating and loss of power. Brightly blued pipes might an early (and permanent) sign.If it's electronic ignition then it should be easy to experiment.

Surely the forum manager can jump in and move the thread/conversation to the right place to keep things tidy and logical.
