It's difficult to see from this angle. Probably a WD16H - oil tank is definitely late-war WD16H. Front forks are pre-1939 with WD handlebar clamps. Gearbox with brass indicator also suggests WD origins but many civilian bikes have gained those.

WD main frame tubes are 1" shorter. A photo from a lower angle would help, or from the drive side to see if there is a field stand lug (most WD had an extra lug there).

Frame number should be on the drive side front fuel tank lug. Is it present ?

If the frame is WD16H then the engine must be a 500cc as the 600cc OHV doesn't fit. Bore x stroke should be stamped on the crankcase. It's likely to be 79x100.

Try again i think I can see a W but the number is 67082 the engine number is the same but diff type stamp and no bore or stroke cant seem to send you photo

Looks mor like a model 18 too me ! they did comission the pubics motorcycles as well the W stamp mark says its been checked by the MOD see the VMCC for war records

As Richard says - WD 16H frame 'cradle frame'; WD forks, gearbox and oil tank; military type vertical saddle spring studs; post war civilian toolbox; solid handlebar clamps without the prewar rubber bushes; OHV engine with parallel push rod tubes (not tapered together at the top) so that's pre-1938. Mudguards not prewar Norton nor WD.Either someone has put a mid-1930's ES2 or Model 18 engine into a WD Norton frame or it's a Model 19 engine in a Big 4 frame. You could measure the engine stroke to work out if it's 500 or 600.But never mind it's not all correct - it looks very nice to me.

HI Roger,

The engine looks to be a 1937 ES2/Mod 18 as it has through cylinder studs and a 14mm plug. The 16H carb (1") needs a smaller inletstub than an OHV (1"+1/16th).The enginedoesn't look tall enough to be a model 19 as the barrel is 1+1/4" longer for these engines. Both the petrol tank and the toolbox don't look quite the right shape and sizeto be original Norton parts, even later ones. One other point you should check is the front fork main spring lengthas the forkshave too much sag even without you sitting on the bike. Hoping it works out O.K

Regards, Richard.

W designation is War Department 16H. If engine and frame numbers match then the bike has not been dismantled. As your bike has an OHV engine then the engine has been stamped at some stage to match the frame number hence the different forms of the numbers

Forks are numbered in thecentre front of thelower clamp (Under that cracking headlamp) Tanks arer usallystamped in various locations.

The engine andframenumbers nevermatchedprewar....

What a beaut, but mind tyhe suicide stand... :)

Don't Panic! That stand stows backwards OK - it's not the suicide version. You should be able to confirm the engine size by removing the spark plug and measuring the stroke. How does it go, Roger?

In the Log book the engine number w87961 written in pen and the colour was black that was in 1949 but cant find anymore info as pre dvla

Runs well and use her all the time

how do we find out more info when first registered

Your frame nunber W67082 is from the same contract as my WD16H. C11082, 1942, which was for 10000 bikes. The engine number on your logbook is from a batch of numbers that the WD files have been lost. Not really much help to you as that isn't the engine in your frame. 1949 would be the date it was sold from the MOD and they were often painted black by the dealers. Someone has changed the 500cc sidevalve engine for your lovely open valve Model 18 engine. I'm actually doing as similar thing with a slightly later Model 18 engine. Your bike looks great so I wouldn't get bogged down too much with originality. Easy enough to put a WD16H engine back in if you wanted to get it back to WD spec.

The forks have a number located near the centre spring. Some tanks were numbered but not everyone.

Hi all

I have removed the spark plug and measured the stroke as suggested and its 140mm or 14cm or 5 1/2 inches does that confirm engine size please

As David mentioned, if post-1936 then the vertical saddle spring studs indicate a WD16H frame. The presence of the extra field stand / pillion footrest lug confirm this.

To the best of my knowledge, Norton never made an engine with more than a 120mm stroke (the 633cc side-valve) The 588cc Model 19 had a 113mm stroke.

The 600cc OHV engine is an extremely tight fit in the standard frame and will not fit the WD16H frame - it is simply too tall.

Your engine must be a 500cc with a 100mm stroke and could be from a Model 18 or an ES2 depending on the original frame type (engines were identical). The only way to be sure is to see if the original engine number is still visible.

There is no point in worrying too much. What you have is non-standard but looks to be good fun, although I'd replace the fork spring and build-up the rear stand stops.

The Model 19 engine from 1931-32 was 79x120 588cc which was still an open valve engine. It became 82x113 597cc in 1933.
