How to get the crank nut and oil pump off?

Forums

Hi everyone, Ive got a 31 model 18 engine which I need to get apart, its the first engine of this age some im taking it easy and not forcing anything. I need to get the large nut off on the right side. My question is 1. do I need to get the oil pump off first and how do I do that? and 2. Is it a matter of locking the piston and turning the nut anti-clockwise? its tight, is it supposed to be so tight, Im not willing to force anything at this stage. Thanks Dave

Lock the crank at half stroke with some wood blocks under an old piston pin,As the crank worm nut starts to move the oil pump should ease off with it.

Great guys, the worm nut is now off. Oil pump doesnt want to move. Ive tried to tap it, shall apply a little heat?

Looks like the pump nuts have been fitted without washers and the aluminium has spread onto the studs. Wouldn't use heat just try working the pump backwards and forwards to achieve some movement, the aluminium gives away eventually, John

Hi.

Put the drive worm back on and put a spanner on the nut holding theoil pump drive cog, then (gently) windthe pump offthe studs. If this fails, take an old 5/16 CEI nut, cut a slot in it, put it on the stud and grip it with a pair of Mole grips so that itpinches the stud and remove the stud(s) - a little bit of heat on the crankcase near the base of the pump would help here.

Ian.

All the above tried thanks, however pump is not moving, this may a silly question but its not held on from inside the case is it? thinking now of welding a nut onto the stud to remove studs as not enough stud showing to to hold an extractor.

There is now nothing holding the pump on.!! HA ,HA. its just stuck ,maybe some gloop on a gasket .I would use a copper hammer (GULP!) and give it a few light raps , or clamp a C mole onto the body and use a slide hammer /G clamp on the mole and hit against that.Mind you some early pumps were made of softer stuff?, Check that out first.

This SOB is on tight! the engine is now out and split. Going to get the nuts welded onto the studs tomo and take the whole stud out. The oil pump doesnt turn very well, are they easy to recondition or is it a specialist job?
