Hexagon... fuel tap

Funny thing today. Opened the tap I usually consider the reserve.. and fuel leaked profusely from the othet. It seems the bottom seal doesn't. But when I open this one it's fine!

So if I ever use reserve I must make sure I close tap #1if I open #2... or I'll run out of fuel even quicker. ...or even catch fire!

Now to understand the mystery of the seals.

Sounds a bit like what happened to me, before I learned about the ethanol problem. The Reserve was left with fuel in it and when I turned it on after a very long time, I found the sealing washer disolved and passing fuel and the force of the remaining fuel finding dozens of holes in the hose.

There was a TVR burnt out on the A64 a few weeks ago. One way of getting old vehicles off the road.

I do prefer the mechanical leaver taps. Corks were fine with good fuel and regular use but that's not the case much these days.

How fuel has changed. Yesterday I started an A10 which had been lying for 15 or more years. I didn't strip the carb and I even used the petrol which was still in the tank after all that time. And it goes and after a warm up it ticks over nicely. Could this be the world's last 4 star? I'm almost reluctant to fill it with new petrol. Sigh.

Hi Gordon, yes, the good old stuff, that said, the Esso Synergy Supreme + 97 RON they say is good for 2 years and all my tanks are filled with it.

They reckon E5 on the other hand has a shelf life of around 3 weeks and the petrol is poor quality anyway, boosted by ethanol. So, if you take the ethanol out, what are you left with?

With regret, I'm not aware of any pump E0 available North of the boarder. You will need to dip into your AVGAS or sack the Green SNP!

BTW, keeping on topic, I still have not been able to find an ethanol proof petrol tap that includes a reserve, this after several years searching. Always best to ethanol proof where possible, especially with only some of one brand of fuel supplying this market.

Hi Neil, I'm still using an orriginal reserve tap as fitted new on the Dommy, a Ewarts . I have a spare tap and half a doz new plungers. They don't however give more than a couple of miles reserve. If you can find one I will fix it up for you!. I seem to have the worlds remaining stock of these ,they are quite different to those on sale now.E -Bay Classic Bike shop (BSA111)sell a usefull 2 way tap ,I have one on my Rudge.About £20.
