Hello, my new Inter and a question, if I may

Forums

Hello, just acquired a 1947 Inter to sit alongside my other bikes, including a rotary, quite a contrast!

Some pics here if you'd like to see it.

now, first of many questions, no doubt. I live in London, near Kempton park, but the Inter seems entirely suitable for everyday use, much better than, say, my Goldie, apart from the carb. It has a 10 TT fitted and I wondered about fitting a more road- based carb to it. Does anyone have experience of this, what did they use, jetting and is it a worthwhile swap to perform? I was thinking a monobloc might be a fair choice.

Any my advice always welcomed. I'm taking it to Brooklands ton up day this Sunday, come and say hello, I might let you buy me a pint!

cheers

Verynice Paul, veryshiny too, itis new isn't it! Regards thecarb, what is your issue with it? Irun a10TT9 (Standardequipment onthebike)and it starts andrunsvery sweetly; once wehada little tweak. Modern concentric carbwill fuel it and Amal(Burlen) willjetit accordingly ifyou are looking foraneasy option, but they don't lookright on astandard bike, butasyou have brightened it up somewhat thena new carb may suit well. Just give them acallthey will put you on the rightpath.

Now gosortthatwiring out on hertail... wink

Hi Paul

Very nice bike!

There have been a couple of old postings here and here about this subject. As I said then, with a bit of persistence the TT carb can be made to run well. But a concentric does make it easy... Whichever route you decide to go down I can have a look and see what jets I have used.

Good luck

I was wondering whether a pre-monobloc 289 would be more suitable given that they have separate float chambers, so would look more in period. It could no doubt be fitted with a long bell-mouth, and they are available new again from Amal. I have looked through the Amal book, and can't seem to find what bore sizes they are available in, but a phone call to them would soon get the answer. Does anyone have any experience of these? I really think a Concentric would look naff, given that they came out 20 years after this model was built.

What problems are you experiencing with the TT, Paul? It may just be worn, and needs a rebuild by the likes of Martin Bratby. What silencer is that, btw? Shouldn't it have a Brooklands can? That may be messing up the fueling..... just a thought.

Hi everyone, some great replies, thank you. Yes, I rode a friends clubman, which was unsilenced and ,as well as being LOUD, went extremely well. I've a megaphone on order and hope to have it fitted for Sunday ;0))

having said that, the pipe looks standard- ish to me and I've seen several pictures with a similar exhaust.

i just felt with the TT that, like the Goldie, the lack of reliable idle is a pain in traffic and wondered if a 'road' carb might be better. Got to say, once started its lovely to ride as it, but far too quiet!

Cheers

Hi Paul - are you getting a Sunday pass for two weekends in succession? With brilliant (!) timing, Norton day at Brooklands is the week after 'ton-up day'. There ought then to be a few more Inter owners to share experience with.RegardsDavid (London SW)

Hi Paul

the TT carb takes getting used to but worth the trouble. Some people achieve a tick over by adjusting the cable but personally, I think this is dangerous, especially with the possibility of the cable getting snagged under the tank and raising the tickover on turning the bars. I discovered the benefit of a closed throttle cut out during a 45 mph " off" in the Irish National Rally a few years ago.!. To start my '35 Inter , very slightly retard, a bit of throttle, one press of the tickler, and almost always a first kick start. Never used the choke. I will be at Brooklands on Sunday as one of the organising committee, hope to see you there.

Dave
