I am attempting to reassemble the girder forks on my CS1. I have two questions. 1) can anyone tell me exactly where the star washer goes on the friction disk portion, is there one each side? 2) Any advice on how best to asseble them without damage. I have already made one atempt and managed to snap the rebound spring lug on the top link. a replacement wasn't cheap.

The star goes inside the knob - which is on the right hand side only (MOD didn't use a knob). So the knob tightens the spindle by pulling from one end.The prongs from the star fit the prongs of the knob, and a button on the back of the star fits dimples in the face of the link to provide a detent.

Many Thanks Dave. I don't have the WD Handbook, but do have the Frank's book which seems to be in the main plagurised from the WD book. Pictures and all. All is unfolding. None of the pictures I have found of the girder forks show an exploded view other than WD forks. I'm determined to get this bike to the Norton weekend in Devon

The WD Maintenance and Ins…
The WD Maintenance and Instruction Manuals were produced by the manufacturers. I'd say there is a fair chance it was written by Edgar Franks or at least under his control. It's probably a bit unfair to accuse old Edgar of plagiarism. In truth, he's probably guilty of not blowing his own trumpet which was of course the way in those days.

I pinched this from somewhere on the web. Might be another m/c club web site. Helpful to show how the spindles fit but the damper is different from Norton's.ps the discs in mine were so greasy I bought new from Russells - but I've since found out I could have washed the old ones clean.Attachments

Paul For 1930s cycle parts the WD handbook is pretty comprehensive. Do you have it?
