Gel battery

Forums

Hi all,

Anyone make a recommendation for a gell battery to fit my '72 Roadster - kick start only, boyer ignition and power box.

What type, sizeand amp - any recommended dealers?

Thanks - Paul

Yes, I can certainly recommend a gell battery for your Commando Paul, they can be left quite a while without losing much charge, and of course there are no nasty acid attacks. As my few remaining lead acid battery's expire, I'll be replacing them with maintenance free gell batteries.

My commando is a Mk 3 so I will have a bigger one than yours but if you have a word with Mick Metcalfe, he can advise you on the best battery for your machine.

The old Boyer's are GR8, so long as your battery is at least standing @ 12V, A gell battery will help maintain that.

Does size matter? Batteries that is

I recently bought a Podtronics from NOC Spares and wonder if this is suitable for use with a gel battery?

Thanks Roger

After my "does size matter" thread, I fitted a Numax 8Ahr (sealed) at a cost of about £25. It works well. I fitted a digital volt meter in the headlight where the ammeter used to go. starting from scratch shows about 12.3v this drops to 11.5v at tickover and rapidly comes up to 14v at 1500rpm. I have a 3 phase alternator, boyer power box, Boyer ign and run with my lights on all the time. I wouldn't put an expensive battery on a simple Norton unless it had an electric start.

I've been reading up on different types of regulator rectifiers including series, shunt and mosfet types. Seems like there is scope for improving the output/life of your alternator by only generating as much power as you need. Any electrical boffins out there care to put us in the picture?
