Hello Stef its is said that EP 90 is not very kind to the bronze bushes inside the gearbox but this ST90 is kind to your bronze bushes So in effect we been told wrong about EP90 Has I was talking to Castrol over the phone the other day ep means extreme pressure use with in the gearbox our old bikes are not under that much of pressure when running yours Anna J

I took a look at Castrol's website for a description of the ST90 oil. This is what it said:

Castrol ST90 Monograde SAE90 Mineral Gear Oil

Castrol ST90 is a monograde SAE90 gear oil formulated with high quality mineral oils. Castrol ST90 is fortified with anti-oxidant and anti-wear additives to ensure that the oil is able to withstand the oxidising conditions which will be present in the gearbox during service.Castrol ST90 is suitable for the lubrication of most types of gear including helical, spur, bevel and worm but most not be used for hypoid gears which require extreme pressure lubricants.Castrol ST90 is not suitable for applications where MIL-L-2105A/B/C are specified.

So, Castrol ST90 is not a hypoid gear oil, and will be chemically incompatible with them. So if you switch from an EP90 oil, you will have to flush the system

Why does it follow that the system needs flushing? They are mineral based. ST90 apparently does not have the EP additives. But why should it matter if some traces remain? It's not like mixing vegetable with mineral oils, is it?

I certainly hope not! Because I've just done this a few weeks ago, drained the EP90 and replaced it with ST90 ...
