Fitting magneto

Forums

Should the magneto fit right up to the timing chain cover? I've had to find another magneto platform for my 1935 ES2 and on fitting the mag there is about a 1/4 inch gap between the mag and the rear of the timing chain cover. Also should there be any kind of seal to keep out muck? I'm just wondering if I've got the right platform - its a cast iron one like the 16H.

I fear that the platform which you have is not suitable for the 1935 engine. Nortons seem to have regularly altered the timing gears and chest resulting in a number of changes to the magneto mounting plate offset.

The critical thing is not so much the gap (or lack of it if you fit a 1938 or later civilian pattern mounting plate) but that the sprocket on the cam is in line with that of the magdyno.

I haven't looked at the pre-1937 engines but I do know that there are at least three subsequent variations. I had the opposite problem in trying to fit a 1938-pattern platform to a WD engine, in that the magneto was tight against the rear of the case with chain out of line.

I've had a look at the parts lists and can see the following :-

1933 - 1935 - Part No. 9088

1937 & WD - Part No. 3711 (Alloy)

Late WD - Part No. 3711A (Cast Iron)

1938 pattern - Part No. 8918 (Enclosed valves engine) (Alloy)

There is also a further, final version with even more offset fitted to the 1948-on circular tappet engines

The iron 'spectacle' shape mount can only be a late WD type which fits the 1937 pattern engine...assuming it's not a pattern part and generally incorrect.

As far as I can tell, it is only the offset that altered so it could be corrected by machining the front face of the lug and packing the rear by the same amount.

Thanks for the info, Rich. As you say getting the correct offset to line up the sprocketsis the key. I think I'll have a go at modifying the platform I've got.

As has already been said, getting the chain inline is the important bit. Once that is sorted there may still be a gap there. A lot of bikes have a thick cork or felt washer in the gap to stop the dirt getting in, so if there is still a gap once you have the sprockets lined up this will keep the dirt out. I don't know how it is meant to be done on the ES2 specifically though so it may be a case of working with what you have and making it fit.
