Fitting Commando 2LS brake to Slimline 99

Forums

Would be grateful for any advice on fitting Commando 2LS front brake on Dominator 99 with 7" forks.

Everything fits except that when tightening front axle the .wheel starts to bind.

Have noticed on a Commando with 7 3/8" forks that brake plate sits proud of drum by 1/8", whereas mine sits flush in drum, using Dominator axle.

Do I need to use a Commando axle, or shim it out?

I see many photos of Dominators fitted with a 2LS.

Can anyone advise, please.

Hi Bert - If your Dommie brake plate fits without binding then so should the Commando one unless it has been played with.  By that I mean for instance if someone had used a 7 inch Dommie fork leg in the wider 7 3/8 inch yokes then the brake-plate could have been modified - however,  it is unlikely, though I have seen it done on occasions.  So because the earlier leg is narrower a 3/16 inch spacer is necessary between the fork leg and the plate. Moreover it is also necessary to lengthen the male torque stop by 3/16 inch to engage safely with the slot in the leg.  It would be obvious had this been done so I am stupid to mention it.  Good luck, Howard

I have both Dommie and Commando axles and they are effectively the same. Apart from overall length and thread size...anyway they both work. So it's not that. Are you sure the stanchions are parallel? The wheel is really only held on one side. The stanchion with the pinch bolt should not quite touch the wheel. The problem I have is stopping the pinch bolt stanchion from slipping side to side and not damaging it.

The brake binding is probably a case of mixing parts from different machines. The old SLS will have worn a shallow trough/groove in the brake drum lining. The 2LS has probably got a set of brake shoes on it that are just a few thou wider or slightly to one side when placed in the drum. The result of bolting up the bits is that part of the 2LS shoes bind on the edge of the trough/groove in the old drum lining.  You get a similar problem if old and new clutch plates are mixed.

You could try messing about with shims to get this sorted but a far quicker fix is to chamfer each shoe edge just 1mm deep and wide.

Check that the drum is central to the fork sliders and that you are following the correct procedure for tightening the axle nut and fork pinch bolt. This can also affect the front brake set-up.

Many Thanks for the above information.

I will let you know how I get on.

All now sorted.

I chamfered edges of each of the shoes, where the friction material was a bit too proud.

Also found that there was some excess metal on the inner surface of the brake-plate that hadn't been cleaned up properly during manufacture.

Many Thanks to All for your help.

I bought a new LH Commando fork leg for my Dommie years ago. I haven't ridden since, using it. It was all I could buy back then., and I diddn't notice that it has 3/16" more 'meat'.

Difficult to get the front wheel in between the forks, but I managed.

Reading this thread was most helpful!

Thanks

Steve
