Featherbed single coil mounting

Forums

Hi All,

I have run my Slimline featherbed model 50 for years with a K1F magneto that came offa Velocette, now due to problems with fuel, kneesetc, I am converting to Boyer Bransden to get a stronger spark and possibly so that I can use triple electrode shielded plugs, (incidental, I don't want to start another fuel thread!), and I am struggling to mount the coil in a suitablywindblown place, I have made a clip to mount it to the nearside frame rail, where it is VERY close to the valve lifter lever and the tank bottom but just clear, it will do there whilst I see if this works out, but I was wondering where did the coil mount originally?

I have seen it on the tank strap lug, between the oil tank/battery box (where I have a toolbox), under the seat (where I have my regulator and soon amplifier boxes), and at the front, opposite the horn, but all of these looked like lash ups, I built my bike up from unrelated parts years ago, so I never saw what it should actually be like.

Could some kind soul post a picture?

Cheers,

Niall

My 1961 Model 50 is, I believe, all original. The coil is mounted to the underside of the tool tray, i.e., between the battery box and the oil tank.

Hi Niall

I have a 1960 original slim line model 50 (I know they weren't supposed to be made until 1961 but my original buff log book say this bike was first reg on 12th Oct 1960! I'll get round to telling the NOC sometime) any way I digress. The coil is mounted on a small bracket welded on the top frame tube so it fits just above and to the side of the carb.Just under the petrol tank.

As I'm fairly new to this lark, I'm not sure how to attach a photo yet but if you haven't sorted the mounting out, please askand I'll try

Thanks fellas,

the main thing is I'm back on the road, the Boyer set up is a BIG improvement for starting, and acceleration is improved too, The tickover is now a bit faster because with the manual mag I had on I could get steam engine speeds, but all in all, probably an improvement. With the bike back together, the coil is invisible where I have it and exposed enough to be cooled. The transducer unit, I ignored Boyers instruction to tie-wrap it to a frame tube and made a clamp to fix it to the head steady again out of the way but in an air flow.

John if you manage to attach a photo I would be interested to see it,

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Niall

Hi John,

The Norton production year started in September each year so 1961 models were first built in September 1960 so this ties in with your bike being registered in October 1960. Sounds like it is one of the first batch of model 50's built for 1961.

I ahve always wondered if that tang in the center of the frame crossbar had another purpose. On mine it is only being uses to locate the large "O" ring that is holding the rear of the fuel tank down. Was there a special hold down device originally supplied when the bikes were new?

Niall: my email address is mikemill20@aol.com. If you will contact me I will send you some photos of my bikes coin mounting.

The tank is held down at the back by the two metal 'tangs' (As shown on the photo which I'm amazed I managed to post!)

Many thanks for your information regarding manufacturing years, It answers alot of questions for me as I was always convinced my model 50 was Oct 1960, I must get round to getting a certificate from the club for it.

Thanks for the picture john, I have often wondered about that lug, I have also seen it used for tank straps, is the coil not a bit exposed to rain there, especially the LT connections?

Thanks again,

Hi Niall

Coil is well protected at the side if the carb, and under the tank, and so far(4000mls) so good.

From my Domi days I thought all slimlines used this method to fix rear of tank using a 'Hoover' type belt. When the seat is located on the same lugs it virtually covers the rubber.

ps Tried to post more photos but unable to do so this time!.it was probably beginners luck!
