The Atlas Understeers markedly ,its especially noticable if I switch from the 99 to the Atlas. The head bearings could be orriginal so I will renew them Are sealed taper roller bearings availiable and is it still thought to be a good mod?.I did the 99 rollers 25 years ago (unsealed) so they may get renewed as well although it steers perfectly and turns in well.

Hello Robert - I do find i…
Hello Robert - I do find it's better to replace the cup and cone offerings that AMC fitted to the featherbeds. However I should say that a pair of taper rollers are not my preference riding about towns and twisty countryside lanes. They steer much heavier than say a pair of angular contact ball bearings. In my production racing bikes I opted for a crowded ball thrust ball bearing set in the top and bottom races. In my road bikes I find that a pair of good European made thrust races with a brass cage steer well and last forever. The taper rollers tend to be a millimetre thicker than the angular contact ball so the yokes sit lower or higher however you're fitting them. That gap would need attention on a road bike. Cheers, Howard

You could try the Commando frame bearings as these fit ok and I have them in all my featherbed framed bikes.

I tried unsealed taper rollers years ago. Suffice to say, they were replaced with normal cup and cone bearings soon after.
