FASTENERS FOR REBUILD

Forums

Hi, I am in the process of strip down of a Commando 850 2a for full refurb and rebuild. So many of the nuts, bolts etc. are going to need replacing as they are rusty or tarnished. What are the views on replacing with stainless steel and where is a good source for a good mix of SS or plated replacements??

Anyone got good experience with a supplier of those domed chrome nuts and other fasteners which are specifically for Commando application??

All help much appreciated

For general fasteners I use Nooky's nuts - decent quality, plain bolt heads and reasonable prices. But he has a fairly limited range and all the "bolts" are actually setscrews.

Stainless - Middletons and Molnar are good but not cheap.

The 850 MK2A has a lot of UNF nuts and bolts which make it easier than most to go stainless, the specialist stuff is covered well by RGM, as well as the above recommendations.

Be very careful with Stainless steels. Most of the Ebay mob use 316 grade steel, no fatigue resistance, and soft. It will not torque up, and stretches. Use 12.9 cad plated cap-heads, or aircraft fasteners. Most aircraft fasteners are UNF thread. You will be amazed at the mark-up on Vintage Parts these days. Engine bolts, try Jaguar Classic Spares, chassis bolts are 3/8 unf and strong. Go to a supplier like Cromwell tools, buy boxes, and sell on the surplus. Most commercial metric bolts are 8.8, and equivalent to R unf bolts. I bought many boxes of bolts at 50p a box when stockholders closed in the 70's. Triumph motorcycle manuals have a list of all the fasteners and sizes/ threads used. Very handy. I make anything a bit expensive as I have a stock of Helicopter bolt steel. Try Parkers steel stockholders for certificated bolts. Volkswagen cars use stretch bolts on nearly everything, very tough. Leyland car bolts are useful as well.
