Exploded alternator

Forums

The alternator rotor exploded on my 1971 Fastback. It has written off the alternator completely, and the primary inner case, and "smeared" the keyway and key. I think I have the correct location for the keyway and have tried drilling it out, but still can't get what I think is the remains of the key out. Is the key much softer than the crankshaft, the location was quite easy to drill? Or have I just scrapped my crank too? Does anyone know how many degrees round from the primary sprocket keyway the rotor one is (they are not in line I think)?

Try this link Steve.......

Looks like sprocket key is at 90 deg right of crankpins at TDC. Alternator key is 90 deg further c/w if that makes sense. Just do a Google search for Commando alt rotor keyway and hit Image button. Best of luck.
