What's this for?

Forums

The arrow on the photo is pointing at a bracket that is bolted to the centre channel section of the lightweight frame.  It appears to be welded or brazed to the tubular cross piece.
What is it's purpose?
Its only on one side of the frame.

No idea John, if it was a M50 I may be able to advise you, but I know a man who probably can! Where are you Mr Holland  (Peter) !

John,

You need that arm.
It is to stop rotation of the tube you mention.

On deluxe models there was a plain tube between the central bracket top front mounts. A 3/8 inch long stud went across the frame picking up a pair of shorter spacers too. The petrol tank was mounted off the front of a tool tray.

Come the standard model. No tool tray. Petrol tank mount welded to the front of the spacer tube. How to stop spacer, squeezed on the 3/8 stud, from rotating under the weight of tank and fuel?

Fit an arm to the back of the spacer cum petrol mount. Pick up existing slotted hole in central frame member.

Stops rotation of tank mount and the slot even allows a little adjustment of rear tank mount height.

Simple.

I've had to lift the rear of the tank some 6 - 7mm to clear the coil mountings.  The tank had almost worn through where it was touching the bolts that secure the ignition coils.

....in addition, it makes a good earth mounting point for various cables. As there is plenty of paint in that area, make sure the bolt is itself a good earthing point!

Your paintwork looks extremely good!

That paintwork is powder coating, I think.  When I rewired (simplified) the wiring I found out the the paintwork was near bullet proof.  Tried to scrape some off for a good earth connection(s), the scraper barely scratched it, so had to resort to using the angle grinder!

Funny that, plastic coating of metal and paint and rust do NOT conduct electricity. In fact only shiny metal conducts electricity. By the way the bolt canon;y be a good earth if it has contact to shiny metal.
