Exhaust pipe and silencer

Forums

Evening,

I am getting ready to order an exhaust pipe and silencer for my '48 ES2. Mine were missing when I took posession of the bike.

Can anyone speak to the quality of exhaust pipes and silencers from Amour's?

Its going to cost a lot of money for shipping to Canada soI want to avoid the cost and disapointment of needing to send things back.

Has anyone fitted a set to a '48 erra ES2? Can anyone speak of the fitment?

Any other options I should be considering?

Cheers,

Bryon

Hi Bryon

I bought a system from armours for a '50 plunger ES2 but sent it back for a refund. The bend on the pipe was wrong, with the pipe coming up against the kickstart spring cover well before the flange was properly seated in the exhaust port. The silencer mounting hole was the wrong size (Armours admitted that they know about that). I still have not ordered a replacement but am considering Feked. Anyone got any comments about their quality?

Cheers, Ian McD

I got the pipe for my 51 ES2 from armours. It's was close but I had to warm it up and tweak it to make it fit. Then get it replated. Making a pipe without the bike isn't easy. Half a degree at the exhaust port can make a big difference at the silencer end.

I've had silencers from Feked and the quality was very good but they where out of stock on the pipes when I did the ES2 so can't comment on pipes.

Byron,

If you pick the item up from Armours the fit is perfect as I found with my 1930 Model 18 when I was in the UK one year, however when I have had pipes sent to Australia from Armours they had to be re-bent to fit properly.

Silencers I've had from Armours have generally been good but their down pipes have been horrible, not only have the bends been wrong, spectacularly so on a Commando set, but the flange's are to large to fit the head, requiring grinding down. I've also had finish issues where they had been chromed over mig spatter. Their customer service is not always the best either. I would only buy pipes from them now if I couldn't get them anywhere else.

After reading all the adverse remarks on another single marque forum over a few yearsre bad service, pipe bends wrong and ill fitting mount brackets etc etcfrom one particular supplier, I havebought from FEKED, give Gordon a call, apparently they make their own pipes and box's. They are easy to deal with.

Another manufacturer who made some lovelly silencers for my twin, is Brituro. Purchased through Ebay shop. 'BSA111'

What about WALDRIDGE MOTORS up your way?

Morning,

I have been in contact with WALRIDGE. They quoted me on the Armour products, hence me asking specifically about them!

Idon't mind paying for the product, but I'm not interested in paying for someone elses mistakes by way of return shipping charges and restocking fees. Most times its cheaper for me to throw the item under my bench and order the item again from another supplier.I have a growingcollection ofparts that won't work on my bike for one reason or another! There is a bit moremoney going into the exhaust so I'm trying hard to ensure I order the correct part.

Appreciate the feedback so far....

Just bought a silencer and front pipe for a 19S from Armours. Silencer spot on. Flange wrong on frontpipe, I rang them and they said I could (easily ?) remake the flange myself or I could send the pipe back for them to do it. Trying to decide what to do, surely to get it spot on they would need the bike so how could they redo it. If they had a bike to test t on surely it would have been sent off correct.

Anyone know how to alter the flange ?? this may be my best option, I have metalworking experience so am willing to have a go.

cheers

Once you have made the flange fit, which can be done with an angle grinder but is neither an easy or pleasant job, you'll probably find that the bend is incorrect & that it will foul the footrest &/or the silencer will foul the kick start. If you send it back, they will just send another pipe which will quite likely have the same inaccuracies. Armours are well aware of this, but are still quite happy to sell these products, seemingly taking no notice of customer feed back, often claiming not to have had any complaints in the past. My advice would be to send the pipe back & demand a refund, then source a pipe from elsewhere. Only by doing this will we ever force a supplier to make some effort to ensure the parts they sell will be fit for purpose.

After going through 3 or 4 Armours pipes for my Slimline Model 50and having the wrong bends and flange breakages, I bought a pipe from Feked.

The quality is good and it appears to me that the thickness of the pipe itself is considerably thicker than the Armours units. The fit and bend was perfect except that the lower run of the pipe was too long. After investigating and talking with the guys at the factory I determined that the pipes for the Wideline and Slimline are different with the Wideline units being longer. I cut about 3" off the pipe and it fit perfect. I sent a bunch of photos to tha guys at Feked and I believe that they have sorted their production and catalogto reflect the differences in the models.

In defence of Armours.. my 16H pipes fitted perfectly and plating was immaculate. And my Dommie siamezed pipes for 1963 SStype head were a good fit also. Detail issues...1/4"instead of 5/16 bolt hole in 16H but maybe later bikes differed? The stock list is huge...it's no surprise that some aren't correct although engines were always changing also. Where do they get the info?

I have heard of late that Armours usually have 4 pipe benders working for them but are down to 1 plus 1 part time. That's what was said when after sending a set of Rudge exhausts to them as patterns to make a couple of copies, six months elapsed with nothing done. I gave up and got them to send the originals back. It might explain why some of their pipes are not as good a fit as they might be. I am generally quite happy with their products.

Morning William,

What year ES2 did you install the Fecked exhaust on?

It's a 1952 plunger, it was a straight swap, no tinkering required
