ES2 valve clearance

Forums

Sorry to resurect an old subject but valve (tappet) clearance on the iron head ES2 is given as 'pushrods free to rotate' on the compression stroke. How free is free? I have always set mine so that the pushrod can be 'spun' on the follower. I just wonder if that isn't a little loose. I know loose is always better than tight, but does anyone else have a method as feeler gauges are not used?

I have never seen a clearancespecified other than only havingboth push rods free to rotate without any perceptible up and down movement.

Ãne full turn of the adjuster screw will alter the rod length by .0385", so an eigth of a turn will give just under 5 thou.clearance from the point of just feeling resistance to turn with the finger. So just cracking the adjuster back a fraction from detecting a slight resistancewill be giving a couple of thou clearance, which is what they were talking about.....I think!

Very hard to be precise as the cushion of oil in the rod cups masks any clearance being felt.

Thanks Paul, that is as comprehensive an answer as possible. This has not bothered me in the past but now I've started to think about it.... well, you know how it is. I wonder how the clearance would seem once the engine were hot; if the pushrods were still 'just free to rotate' would mean they were adjusted too tight; I assume they should be slacker once the engine had heated up and done its expanding. Only one way to find out, I suppose...
