I have a 1955 ES2 and the oil tank has a feed pipe connection at the rear of the tank, in addition to the usual outlet and return pipe connections at the front of the tank. Is this normal and if so where does it feed to? Unable to find any information in the books/photos I have.
Feed pipe or vent?

I think...
... that it was designed so that you can attach a small pipe and use it as a rear chain oiler. That's what I've done with mine.

Breather and chain oiler
This is correct. My 1955 ES2 has a small bore copper pipe that points at the rear chain. It's not easy to take a photo as it's quite congested behind the battery carrier.
There's not much evidence that oil or mist gets to the chain though!

Can you look inside the oil tank and see where "feed pipe" terminates in the tank?
I am thinking that it is just the vent pipe. There should be a hose that directs the vent to the ground or to the top of the chain guard.
