Hi All,
I have a minor query. I am about completed with the ES2 restoration, Just the ignition timing to finish. The problem I am having is I want to time it with the time honoured stick down the plug hole method, a search on the web has given me 3/8 btdc and 7/16. Which is correct? the bikes a 1960 ES2.
Many thanks Rob

I time my ES2 at 5/8" full advance, just as the ownersbook calls for, also J.B. Nicholson's 'Modern Motorcycle Mechanics', specifies the same advance.

What year is your bike?
i.e.: is it a magneto unit or coil and points?

Hi Rob,
Thefactory 1960 Norton Maintenance Manual (Publication P101)specifies 7/16" or 11.11mm for the ignition timing. However the factory 1961 Norton Maintenance Manual (Publication P106) specifies 17/32" or 13.5 mm for the ignition timing as Gordon has previously reported.
Other publications I have such as Haycrafts "Book of the Norton (1955-1962 models) also lists 17/32" for the ES-2. P. L. Garrett specifies 38 degrees for 1959 - on ES-2 and Model 50 as does F. Neill.
With the greater volatility of modern petrol I would start at the 7/16" setting and check performance. With coil ignition it is easy to advance to the 17/32" figure if desired.
regards, Ian

Thanks for the Info. I've timed it at 7/16, seems fine starts really well.
Many thanks to all
