I have had all kinds of problems getting bits for my GB8 gearbox - I have started to collect the parts to convert to standard. However I have been told I should convert to an AMC box as it is a much nicer box, quick gear changes and positive engagement. Any thoughts? How easy is it to do? Why?

The bike is a 1956 so could get away with originality. However would prefer better ride to originality every time. Will keep my eyes open for one - does it have to be Norton AMC or would an AJS do?

An AMC gearbox is no better, or worse, than a lay down in good condition. The only reason for changing is the ease of obtaining spares. However most parts for the lay down box are still available, with a little searching. Have you tried RGM ? They supplied several parts for my 1954 gearbox, last year.

I'm sure you would need 57/58 rear engine plates to fit the AMC box? I have been trying to get a set of these platesfor almost six years now. I'm almost on the verge of throwing out my 57 Model 50 frame.
If you can use earlier plates with the AMC box I'd be pleased to know as I had been offered some

OK....it will not be as original but in reality is a very smart modification. The ES2 Nortons had the AMC box from 1956 onwards and a conversion to this type should not be difficult.
There are gains and losses. The box runs in oil, the later type of clutch can be fitted and spares are 99% available. The actuator mechanism can be a pain to set up to get a good cable run and many boxes drip oil from the kickstart shaft.
