ES 2 Alternator

This 1961 ES2 I have recently bought, has an alternator with two adjacent coils (of the total of 6) with fine windings and many turns. The remaining 4 coils have thicker wire and fewer turns.

The wiring of the bike is a total mess such that I cannot see what wire went where. It has a small ignition coil and a large red rectifier.

I have been told that the fine-wire coils supplied high voltage to the ignition coil via the distributor (the points opened as the rotor moved away from these coils). For this purpose no rectifier was needed on this circuit.

The remaining 4 thicker-wire coils supplied the lighting, battery etc through a rectifier in the usual way.

According to my friend who told me all this, to his knowledge the only bike which had this was a Triumph built for the army (they wanted that bike to start under any conditions even without a battery.

So he thinks my bike has this Triumph alternator fitted.

Does anyone know of a Norton with this arrangement? (I have not been able to find a wiring diagram for the '61 ES2).

IIRC they would be talking about the "energy transfer" system which was used on some Triumph and BSA models. I don't believe any Nortons used this system.

I'd try to source the correct alternator for your bike.

The linked article basically confirms what my friend said.

However, my rotor - just a spinning magnet - does not have any possibility of repositioning on the shaft, nor can the stator be positioned differently.

It does look as if the alternator is not for this ES2.
