Dommi 99 Engine Rebuild Questions

Forums

Bike is a 1959 Domminator '99'

1. What is the recommended method for removing old, and replacing with new, small end bushes ?

2. What is the torque setting for tightening big end bolts ?

3. What is the recommended method for removal and replacement of main bearings ?

4. There is a massive price difference between RGM big end shells (£23.90 + VAT) and Andover big end shells (£39.48 + VAT). Is there a significant difference in material/design/fit/life expectancy ?

5. Any snags/pitfalls that I should be aware of as I approach this task ?

Thanks,

Mike

When you fit new shells check that the rods turn freely as its not unknown for the rods to be oval after much use. RGM shells are ok. A puller will be needed to remove bearing inners from crank .New bearings should not be very tight on the shafts.Heat the cases in an oven to remove and fit bearings. Clean out the crank. Fit flywheel, conrods back exactly in original positions and facing the same way. load reversals are not good. Check ring gaps in the bore.Replace all oil seals,re-furb the pump. Temporarily fit and lightly tighten down the barrels before tightening the case bolts. Read up plenty before you start. Don't worry about asking for info.

The club sell a DVD  of an engine strip and a rebuild by Mick Hemmings so this should help you with your rebuild. There also used to be one by John Hudson.

hello to remove  bronze bushes from the small ends  you need to warm up in your oven  at full setting  for a half hour  do have a thick chopping block or a place of wood cut to 7-inch square  for dropping the rod on to  do ware the right pair of leather gloves  its same with crankcases  warm in oven  you get an even heat  to remove  main bearings  outer  as for removing them from the shaft you need a set of bearing pullers,  See Ebay engineering Tools,  torque settings on the large ends  are 15lb  foot pounds   were as 650cc are 25lb   ring end gaps should be 8 thou on compression rings and no more than 10 thou on oil rings,    do try and find the VHS tape on John Hudson engine strip and rebuild   But do not use a blow torch for heating up parts  the kitchen oven is much more safer way for heating parts    yours   anna j

.... is a bit much - I use 200C for expanding alloy. Any more and you can start to affect its properties.
