Crankshaft Half pinion removal

Forums

Hi I’m having a bit of trouble removing the crankshaft half pinion on my ‘52 Dommie 7.  I can’t get a gear puller on it due to the inset into the case.

I wondered if anyone had a work around avoiding coughing up £40 odd pounds for the tool?

Compliments of the season, and congrats to everyone for the shiny new site

I had the same problem with a Norton Electra unable to get the correct puller. If you are splitting the crankcase do this first then there is room behind the pinion to use a regular puller giving access to the bearing. This worked ok with the Electra and I think it should be the same with the Dommie  Bryon

Somewhere in the depths of this Forum are hidden a bundle of old sensible messages that deal with this very subject. One of them mentioned a really good DIY  tool alternative that worked for me.

It very simply consisted of  two 1/4" diameter Coach bolts with half inch or about that size heads. A chunk of the head of each was sawn or ground to leave enough metal to hook under the crankshaft pinion. A short length of 6mm (or thicker) steel bar was then cut and drilled to make a shoulder for a puller with the coach bolts as the legs and another substantial bolt to act as the extractor.

I used a bent Jubilee clip to hold the Coach bolt heads in position while turning the extractor bolt. Though another drilled (but thin) metal plate would also do the job. Generally I heat the pinion up first before trying to remove it but my DIY Coach bolt extractor pulled it off the crankshaft with no further hassle.

I guess that for a pinion that is proving difficult to remove a third Coach bolt and triangular shoulder would give better purchase.

hello well about 48 years ago I when out a bought the right tool for this job and back then it was 12 shillings and six pence  and I still have the same half pinon puller like new,  you need to build up your own Norton tools and hag on to them and no lending them out,   you never get them back,   or make tools if you cannot get them  ,  like my mulite rose spanner fits both single and twin rose nuts  and my home made clutch locking tool  and home made center holding tool for the center clutch rubber removal and re-fitting, this make fitting easy  and works with the clutch holding tool the center clutch tool fit in vice then clutch center fits over the center holing tool the clutch locking tool then is used to open up the centers spider that holds the clutch rubbers  these then easy come out and can be re fitted with new one the same way,   there are lots of way of making good tools you just need a good imagination   and a bit of skill   and a guinness  just to keep you lubricated      yours  anna j
