Crankshaft end float?

Forums
My inter engine is on its way back together and I have reassembled, balanced and lined up the crankshaft with a new big end and put new main bearings in. I have reassembled the bottom of the engine and got the conrod coming out the centre as described in several books. The flywheels are spinning very nice and freely in the cases but there is absolutely no end float at all. I know that there shouldnât be any once I have clamped the bevel gear up against the double row bearing in the timing side but I think I should have some end float there as I havenât clamped it up yet.Does the lack of end float matter and will the engine tighten up when it gets hot?ThanksAndy

I too am rebuilding a Inter. 1953 vintage. According to the book compiled by Mitchell Barnes titled Building and Tuning the OHC Long stroke Norton Engine you are correct in your concern. There should be plenty of float until the bevel, oil pump drive pinion and left hand nut are fitted.

E.M Franks book say basically the same thing.

How many shims were added to center the conrod? what did they add up to in regards to total thickness. Do you have a measure of how much end float there was before disassembly?

I would be concerned. What temperature are the cases at when you can spin it freely? I would imagine they are fairly warm this time of year compared to December. You could warm the whole thing up in the oven and see if it tightens. I have had a Model 7 assemble with no end float and when warmed to operating temp it freed up nicely and Mick Hemmings told me not to worry about it.

Unfortunately I am not this far with my engine to be able to give you a comparison.

Thanks Mark

I don't have any shims in it at all at the moment, not sure what's going on. They are currently at room temperature in the workshop. I wouldn't have thought I would ever ride it much colder than the weather was when I was doing it. And 10C colder wouldnt make a noticable difference in real terms. The engine will only get looser as it warms up so having done some research and asked several people I am not to concerned.

However I am now back at uni until Christmas so have plenty of time to decide how I want to proceed before I am able to do anymore on the engine.
