Correct silencer for my ES2

Forums

Hello ! The silencer on my 1951 ES-2 looks correct. I know for certain it is at least 40 years old and still in good shape. Appears identical to the one in my 1950 spare parts listing.

But when I peak down it, I see right down it into the exaust pipe.

my question; was there originally a baffle of some kind inside the unit or is it supposed to be an empty expanse.

I do not know if the silencer you were looking at was original or not but,

The silencer that was on my bike ('61 Model 50)was similar to yours. it seemed that from the inlet end there was a high level perforated pipe and on the discharge end there was a similar perforated pipe. When you looked into the pipe from either end you could not see all the way through it. Over the years all the replacements had a single perforated pipe from the front to the back. These "new style" silencers sure seem to have a lot more bark than the original kind.

Thanks Mike

when I look inside mine it is just a hollow chamber...no perforated pipe or baffle at all. It conforms with all of the period photos and photos of restored bike I've seen (see photo attached)

but it does not match the artwork on the 1951 and 1952 sales brochures which have a slightly offset shape to the muffler body.

Curious to know if the baffle is missing or never was there. I know my ES2 is not a highly tuned bike but other bikes I've had certainly were affected if the guts of the silencer were missing.

thanks for the input.

Grant
