Hello ! I finally have my 1951 ES5 on the road and I gotta say, it feels great! Plenty of issues yet to deal with. the magneto is definitly in need of attention but I now have a firm impression of what I have to look forward to.
It is entirely an oily rag bike. Never seen any restoration and has lots of honest wear and tear. I don't want to restore it to brand new look.
That said, nearly every bolt and screw head on the engine plates, transmission, headlight pot etc is rounded over or marred from improper wrenching over the years
My question: is anybody offereing a complete fastener kit ? a kit of all the nuts, bolts and washers needed for an ES2
I've purchased the same kind of thing for my 1950s BMWs and the kit was really handy and a huge savings compared to ordering bolts piecemeal.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I was looking for similar for my 52 ES2 and found the below on Ebay which might help out.
I plan to buy one of these packs just so I can do a little bit of replacement at least on the nuts side of things.
I don't know exactly how well it matches up with ES2 requirements but I figured it could be useful.
I have been looking for a complete replacement kit for a while but not found anything that covers the whole lot.

Not too many BSF fasteners on your '52 ES2 there David! Originally they are mostly BSC, (26TPI).... bearing in mind that 1/4"is 26TPI in both BSF & BSC.
I get my nuts, washersetc from this bloke. Quality is good, as I would expect from G.B. and not from b....y China!

Good selection, and prices aren't too bad, even for me having to pay the exorbitant postage from UK to OZ!

Thanks Paul, That is really helpful. I prefer the older zinc plated stuff. Looks like a couple bags will suit most of my needs. Just need replacments for all the damaged slot headed screws on the Trans and oilpump cover plates etc and and handful of other screws. Too bad Nookys screw kits are all allen head screws. I really want to keep everything looking stock

Hey,
I'd love to get my hands on a complete set of everthing! Have you looked at Molnar Precision's site? They have a bunch of stuff listed for plungers.

Hello B
Excellent advice. They have a huge selection. and easier than most to wade through their parts listings

Grant, from memory those slotted head (cheese head) screws on the timing cover and gear box outer are 1/4"whitworth. A good industrial fastener supplier should have them. I used hex head bolts of the required length, turned the heads round and cut the screw driver slots then'tinned' the head with my soldering iron.

Thanks for the correction Paul. Luckily I had not bought one of those packs yet so I will have to check out your link.

RGM also list everything you are after. In stainless so more expensive but it will last forever.

I think they do the head set for cast iron as well. Will Horgan at stainless classics also has an excellent range. He has an advert in the OBM. And is at several of the jumbles and shows every year.
Just one other thing to mention, Norton used to use cheesehead screws with slightly bigger than standard heads. So if you measure them up individually and buy them from a normal screw/bolt supplier they will be the standard head size. I'm not sure yet if the sets that rgm and molnar do are with the larger heads. But I plan to ring round next week and find out as I am hoping to get some. All depends how much of a perfectionist you are I guess.

Thanks Andy, I'm not a perfectionist and this bike will never be restored to concours but that said, where possible I would like to use proper fasteners.
The RGM guys seem to really offer an excellent line. They are stainless but get a little oil and dirt on those cheesehead screws and who would be the wiser. I do worry about stainless bonding to the alloy of the engine lower case and trans case so my guess is that I should use copper antiseize on them.
anything you can pass on to me about cheesehead screws with the correct diameter would be appreciated.
thanks, Grant
