Commando Interstate fuel tank production

Forums

Hello all.I have a contact who has agreed to produce a prototype, aluminium, Interstate fuel tank. He already has a rubber mount system sorted and will be able to supply a full fitting kit.He intends making the skin of the tank out of 2mm, (maybe 3mm !!), with a Dural tunnel.Obviously this wonât be cheap and he reckons that it will be in the region of £600.00 - £625.00.When he has produced the prototype he is going to send it to me so that I can give it the once over.I would like to get some idea of the level of interest that is likely to be shown in this tank, because as he says, he wonât be able to make them any cheaper due to the rising cost of materials and he says that if I think it is too expensive, it wonât be worth pursuing. Could Interstate ownerswho might be interested in an aluminium tank get back to me please. My e-mail address is inside the front cover of Roadholder if you would prefer to contact me that way. This enterprise almost took off two years ago, but sank due to the emergence of the steel âIndianâ tank. You can all make your own minds up as to how good, indifferent or bad those tanks are, but Iâm hoping that this aluminium tank will be rather good.I will not be making any money out of this enterprise, I am simply trying to help overcome the fuel problem we seem to be living with. Iâm not sure how much longer my glass tank is going to last and I hanker after a well madealuminium one.Since e-mailing this info I have had one or two questions come my way such as. 'What about a Roadster tank'? 'What about the Indian steel tanks'? 'What about the shape and size'? I'm afraid that if I listen to everyone's opinions the project will never get off the ground. At the end of the day I want a large, good looking Interstate style tank that will take enough fuel to make fuel stops something that only other people do.All the best.Kev.

Hi Kev

How many Gallons will it hold and why Aluminium not steel? Most people seemto be after rhe Roadster tank, me included. Werent all Interstate tanks steel not fiberglass?

Oh and im sure the quality will be good but i do think the price will be an issue.

Sorry to be so negative but you did ask

Cheers

The 1972 750 Mk.lV Commando [Mk.l] Interstate had a fibreglass tank with a capacity variously described as 5.0, 5.2 or 5.25 gallons. It was big anyway.

It is distinguishable by a moulding line down the central axis unless the owner has seen fit to remove it and repaint the tank. Nowadays these tanks can also be differentiated by the petrol coming out of the bottom, sides and anywhere else.

For that year a steel tank could be provided as an option and for 1973 fibreglass was phased out as steel tanks became standard.
