The spring on my centre stand has fallen off - ordered a new one from RGM but it does not fit and I cant find the crrect one in the parts book. It fits on a lug on the right hand side of the swing arm and on a lug on the right side of the cantre stand.
I am thrilled with this scruffy little bike and impressed with the support from thid forum.

If it's any help, the distance between the two center stand springlugs (centre to centre) with the stand down with themachine standing on the stand, on my bike is 4 3/4".If yours is the same, perhaps the earlier spring will suit?
I don;t realy know, but I thought that the swing arm stand springswere attached on the stand cross bar?

Hi guys
When looking for a centre stand and spring for my '54 ES2, I came across different types according to frame type. Rigid obvously different as it's out the back but the confusing 'spring frame' title covers 3 frames not including the Featherbed, Don't take this as gospel but I found the plunger frame had the spring hooked onto a lug on the side of the stand, the swing arm frame with the casting under the frame (mine) had the spring attached to the crossbar of the frame by a pivoting 'P' clip. The later frame '58? has frame tubes under the engine and may be different again, I didn't go down that route as It didn't apply. The spring supplier at Kempton jumble is "not making more in the forseeable future" he said.
I hope this helps. James

OK Stuart, with the stand…
OK Stuart, with the stand up, the measurement between the two spring lugs, center to center, is 4 7/8".
James confirms my thoughts, it would appear your machine has an earlier plunger stand fitted. These don't have a straight, tubularcross bar, but an arching upwards one and are all cast malleable iron.

The centre stand spring fo…
The centre stand spring for the 1957 and later ES2 swinging arm frames, and not the featherbed type is part number 19889. This is as per the 1957 Norton parts book. It is available new from Martin Bratby, and i also saw NOS springs on a stall at Kmepton Park.He goes to allot of autojumbles and he is always at Kempton Park. The spring attaches to a pin on the centre stand, and, also apin on the lower frame rail. This can easily be seen when looking at the frame from underneath the bike. To get the spring back onto the centre stand, loop a strong lenth of string or wire around the lower spring loop. Attach the other end to the frame, and pull the spring forward. Get some one to pull the spring, and then get underneath and guide the spring onto the pin on the centre stand. Job done.

Thanks guys - my bike looks a bit of a bitsa! Crawled around underneath it and can see a lug in the right place on the frame tube - no lug on the centre bar of the stand which is the square rather than arched. it does have a lug on it however on the right arm. It would appear that it is as James describes - all I need is the part numbers and I will search them out!!
