Can anyone recommend a belt drive kit for a Dommi 99?

Can anyone reccomend a belt kit supplier other than Norvil, as i dont really want to give them any more of my hard earned money.

would like one that will fit with no hassle if possible.

cheers

A chain man myself so can't help there but the other bit reminded me of the Ariel Rally in Norfolk in 1993. A German Ariel / Norton enthusiast came up to me and asked if I could recommend a good supplier of Norton parts. Before I could open my mouth he said:' And don't mention Fair Spares.'

After a good chat it appears that even back then there was a problem with returning duff parts.

Anyway, this sort of thing is covered in a couple of other threads so I'll leave it there.

'I will tell you this:' When I needed to replace the primary chain on my Mk3 Commando, I had a choice. £40 for a new Renoldtriplex chain to replace the chain in use without problem since 1976 or £400 for a belt drive kit.

The new chain went on with no hassle!

Good luck!

Is it an AMC or Laydown gearboxLee ?

If the latter, I probably wouldn't bother. I used the RGMkit but a lot of hassle. Not necessarily RGM's fault, I just think insufficient clutch movement on the earlier clutch activation mechanismto worka diaphragm clutch properly.

Hi Lee

I obtained (Via Mick Pemberton) a belt drive for my model 50, but it came from MICK HEMMINGS, in Northampton, I have sinced used Mick Hemmings services various times (including a full gearbox re-build) and found Mick and his wife very helpfull indeed. Give them a call, with all your bike details,I don't think you will be disappointed.

Two other possibles, who used to do modified systems for Dommies, are Tony Haywood and Bob Newby.

I do believe that, many years, ago Norman White also dabbled in Norton belt drive systems as well.

Hi Lee,

I tried a belt drive kit for my 19S from RGM, the pulleys didn't line up and I never could get it to work right even though the clutch was similar to the dommie clutch. I reverted back to the dommie type clutch after I had problems for the last time. Out of curiosity I weighed the components and was surprised to see that the RGM clutch basket assembly was considerably heavier than the standard dommie clutch! I now have a late type 650SS/Atlas clutch fitted, there is NO way that clutch will ever slip!

Hi Lee,

I have fitted a belt drive to my 650SS and the main problem I had was that the clutch hub did not run true on the gearbox shaft. I checked it out by spinning it up in a lathe and it was easy to see the hub centre had not been welded in "straight". Very irritating when you live 12000kms away from the source. Anyway I took the punt on buying another hub from the opposition and yes, this one was ok.

Apart from that, I would recommend it, at least I can find neutral easier now and there is no oil leak from the chaincase!

Hi Lee,

I know of three pre-commando bikes running the kit from Les Emery at Norvil. Each said it went in without issue & all are loving a dry primary & the commando diaphragm clutch. Not a cheap kit, but quality usually isnt.

Hi Lee,

I fitted a Norvil commando typeclutch and belt drive (picked up on E-bay) to my 1961 alternator ES2. It fitted OK but I was not happy with it as it dragged and it was hard to select neutral. My Mk3 commando owned from 2 years old has always dragged so I should have known better. So I sold the diaphragm type kit and bought a Bob Newby 6 spring racing clutch. It fitted well and works a treat, not dragging, light lever action and costs about the same as the other kits. Only problem has been some gearbox oil working its way along the pushrod and causing the plates to stick slightly. You may find this problem with any of the belt drive kits. I have cured this by fitting the RGM Dominator shaft seal. This meant cutting about 5mm off the end of the gearbox mainshaft at the clutch end to get clearance for the clutch adjuster but as the mainshaft is not hardened this is not a problem.

I can recomment the Bob Newby belt drive and clutch as I have also fitted it to my 1954 International and almost finished Atlas cafe racer with no fitting problems, no chaincase leaks and it is very good,

I fiited a Belt Drive from RGM to my 1961 99 three years ago. I was have continual problems with oil leaks and having to adjust the primary chain! Since fitting the RGM Belt with Commando clutch I have had no problems at all. RGM were very helpful prior and during fit. Locking the left side of the gearbox helped alignment.
