BTH magneto/alternator

Forums

Anyone else using one of these? Have you come across any problems and who did you send it to or get to fix it?

I have no spark at the moment,I'm waiting on a new coil and HT lead, could it be the regulator/rectifier?

This unit was bought new in 2007 and remained unused and was not mounted on the bike until recentley.

BTH was bought over 2 years ago,the new guy is not interested and provides no back up for this model.

I have actually come across this, but I don't think I'm going to be able to solve your problem. Tony Harris developed this to be able to cater to road machines that would have had a magdyno. I believe he ran one on his bike as a test bed for quite a while. I only saw the initial prototype, so I don't know whether there were any changes to it. I didn't know it went into production, if indeed it did.

I have an early PVL ignition system on my Scott, and have never had cause to measure the outputs. They are generally very reliable though. I'm surprised that you have been told there is no support for this, but maybe if you word your questions differently it might make a difference... what I mean is that I'm fairly sure this is the standard original BTH Magneto, just with a scooter alternator sitting on top. I can't see why there would be any electrical connections between the two, unless I am mis-remembering the way it was done. I think that you want to know what the trouble shooting procedure is for a normal BTH magneto and start there. BTH do a trouble shooting page which I'm sure you've found but I'll post the link anyway:

Hey Richard, had a good chat with Peter at BTH,nice fella but couldn't really offer any practical help, what he did do was get in touch with Tony for me who in turn got in touch with me,delightful fella, seems to know exactly what the problem is,he invited me around and he is going to fix it and test it for me,bonus too as he only lives 1/2 hour from me.

Excellent. You can't get a better solution than that.

Richard
