Hello, could someone please explain step by step in layman's terms how to set the tappet/valve clearances on a 1949 model 18 engine,I know that the bottom nut/pushrod is held while the middle nut /lock nut is loosened but where exactly do I put the feeler gauge to measure this clearance?in my manual it lists both inlet and outlet as zero when engine is cold but should turn freely but without knowing where this clearance is measured, well you can see my dilemma. This is the first motorcycle I have built, complete novice, the engine was rebuilt by Mike Pemberton as was the gearbox,it has a BT-H mag-alt and a Mick Hemmings primary belt drive and clutch,1955 Norton frame but most of the rest of it is from various motorcycles, after market parts and quite a lot of handmade pieces. I hope you like it!

Nice bike, will give you a lot of pleasure I think!
To adjust the clearence for the INLET valve, turn the engine in the driving directionuntil theEXHAUST valveSTARTSLIFTING. Then adjust theINLETPUSHROD just free to rotate with your fingerswithout any up and down movement. You don`t need any feeler.
To adjust the EXHAUST valve turn, the engine in the drivingdirectionto the INLET valve hasJUST CLOSED. Then adjust theEXHAUST PUSHROD just free to rotate with your fingers without any up and down movement. Still no feeler!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!
Not summer here yet,SNOW is falling from heaven to day!!!!!
