I've recently rejoined the NOC because a twist of fate has happily resulted in my purchasing some singles (and I'm sure I will need help from time to time).
My mother has a friend whose husband sadly died last year. I was asked to go along and look at a CZ in his shed which he had had and it was for sale.
There were some Nortons in there too...
I have bought 2 model 19s (very poor state but mostly complete) and several engines and frames, forks, spares etc - woohoo!. So I'm going to be busy for a while.
I have a parts list which will help in the reassembly of the large boxes of bits but I wondered if anyone could recommend a book on the build of Norton singles, hints and tips etc.
I will let you know (with pics) how I get on.
John

Hi all Starting to sort st…
Hi all
Starting to sort stuff out and trying to figure out what goes with what.
Couple of questions (there will be more soon I am sure)
I have a variety of magnetos, 2 labelled K1F and 3 labelled MO1`2. What year did they change over, anybody know please.
What year did Norton change from the Upright gearbox to the laydown one and similarly what year did they change from the laydown box to the `AMC`type. (Thats 3 questions!!)
And another question, a friend wants to buy a rigid frame, gearbox and a complete engine (model 18),mag and gearbox to start his own project, hes a good mate so what would be a fair price to charge please...any ideas.
Best Regards
John

Hi John The two magnetos i…
Hi John
The two magnetos in question were produced side by side. They have different fittings onto the engine. The K1F is a flange mount, held on by three bolts (or more commonly a stud with a nut on it) through the triangular shaped flange on one end. The MO1's are platform mount and sit down on a flat platform on the engine, normally with a couple of holes in it for some locating pegs. It then has a strap that goes over the top to clamp it in place. The MO1 also has a dynamo sit on top of it, whereas bikes with a K1F must have provision for a dynamo elsewhere. As far as I know all of the road going Norton singles have the MO1 type magneto on them. But it will be clear which one will fit if you put it in place as the engine will be very different.
Not sure about the gearbox's but I think it's written down in one of the books I have, if I come across it I will reply again but I'm sure someone else will know.

If I was as lucky as you, I would give a good mate the bits with my compliments. Sounds like you want to know the market value?

To answer Michael Sullivan…
To answer Michael Sullivan the model 19s are both 1956, both need work but they are almost all there, one has a laydown gearbox and the other an `AMC` type so I imagine one of them is wrong (but which one ?).
All the engines need work, barrels need resleeving plus valve seats need doing on a couple of engines. Also one of the ES2 engines needs a new big end. Any one recommend a company who could do this type of work in the Yorkshire area ? (I would prefer to go on personal recommendation).
Im going to start with the plunger frame (now on a table in the bedroom) the frame is 1952 and I have a (knackered) 1951 engine to go in and am starting to realise how many bits are missing. Still, keeps me off the streets.
Cheers
