Another oil bath question!!

Forums

I took my recently acquitted 1956 ES2 out for a short spin last week and was concerned to find quite a pool of oil underneath after I got back. Only had a look underneath today and found the level plug missing! That'll be it then. Also noticed that there is another hole which lines up with the clutch adjusting screw - should that have a bung of some kind in it too? Looked through the parts manual and no number listed for each - can anyone help?

Stuart, they didn't put the hole there until much later than your bike so it looks like it's a home made job. Can't be certain thereforethat the hole is the same size as the later factory one, so I'd offer up a selection of closed grommets

Don't forget not to tighten the outer chain case too tight and try SAE 20 grade mineral oilin there BUT stay away from anything even slightly synthetic. Your clutch won't like it!

Yes Stuart, off the top of my head it is 3/8 cycle thread for your bike, unless that has been messed with. 26TPI if you want to check the thread.

You can get a stainless one from RGM Motors in Cumbria. Mostparts are available for your bike, apart from engine plates. That is a very sore point..

Hi.

The early singles had a larger level plug (as you've just found out!) Andy Molnar http://www.manx.co.uk/pricelists/pricelists.htmLook for MPL Norton Singles & Pre Featherbed Models Stainless Steel Parts and then for NG21 Level Plug, 1/4 BSP, 1/2" dia, domed head. I think this is the one that you are looking for providing your case has not been modified.
