Alloy head modification

Forums

Hello, I have an es2 with a smoking issue. I removed the alloy head and found that there was three head gaskets and fibre seals where the oil ports are . The piston is a wellworthy dome top and I suspect its a high compression. I feel it  should have a cast iron head as the recess in the alloy head is not as deep as the cast one . Has any one any info on these conversions and if so is the fitting of the gaskets and seals the best option ?

Many Thanks Philip

reduced over the years.  If you have a look at the spigot on head and on the barrel, you will probably find that the alloy head has a smaller (less deep) recess than the barrel.  The solution is to take your barrel (with the head) to a machinist, who will reduce the barrel spigot just enough to make it all fit properly.  Note that the barrel should be just a little bit taller than the head recess, by about 1 thou.  It needs to be exactly the right amount.  The usual method is to finish the job by lapping with grinding paste, with coarse paste on the head face, and fine on the spigot area. Then clean it up immaculately before assembly, dry.

You do not specify the source of the smoking issue.  It could be many caused, leaky head face, loose valve guides, external oil leaks onto the head, etc.  If examined properly before removing metal you should be able to cure these.

Hi Philip,

What year is your engine ? Can you post photos of the head, barrel and piston ?

If you have the domed top piston (from a 16H) I suspect the three gaskets were used to stop the valves hitting the piston.  If this is the case the above modifications will bring the valves even closer to the piston!

If you want to continue with the higher compression piston it would be advisable to get valve seat pockets machined into the piston top.  Mike Pemberton (Singles specialist) can do this machining if you cannot do the work yourself.
