Air filters

Forums
Lest I be accused of hijacking Peter's mail on oil filters - has anyone fitted an air filter to a side valve Norton? I don't want to hasten the end of a good engine unnecessarily and even if there isn't enough space for a proper modern filter there must be some improvements available - even if it's just a sponge rubber ball jammed into the bell mouth?I don't want to remove the original brass bell if I can help it (I doubt if will come off anyway).

I have a big 4 1952 with air filter needed for gravel roads which sometimes are used on club runs. I unscrewed the bell mouth which holds the fly screen and clip not mutch of a filter I bought a car rad hose with sharp bends almost 90 deg the same size as the carb mouth and cut out an elbow the correct size for a KN filter could not find fitler no it is2 1/2 in deep and 2 3/4 wide If you point the mouth of the elbow up the filter will just fit close to the oil tank and under the seat 2 jube clips are then used to fasten I tried using thin foam it just bogged the motor down the bike runs well with this set up Bryon

David, air filters were almost invented for side-valve Nortons ! Apart from the wartime Vokes which was developed by Nortons and Shelley's associated company Talboys, the Mechanical Warfare Experimental Establishment was fitting this stylish number to 16Hs as early as 1936...

Not so handy with pillion equipment though.

Hi Richard,

Do you know of anyone in the UK selling the socks for the petrol tank mounted WD air filter. Mine have started to fall apart.

regards, Ian
