1955 ES2 seat (again)

Forums

I have now received my ES2 seat from Leightons, and a very nice seat it is.

It has the correct seat pan, with fixing holes in the same places as the original (when compared with photograps of the original from other members). It is the correct shape and I am very confident it is a copy of an original, which is exactly what Leighons said it was.

I also have some very helpful photographs from other NOC members, which show the mounting bracket at the rear, and some descriptions of where the mounting bracket should go to at the front. (but no picture of it)

However, when I place the new seat in postion, correctly positioned behind the fuel tank, it doesn't appear to be supported by, or line up with, any part of the frame. As and when I make up new brackets to line up with the mounting points on the frame and the rear mudguard, with the seat correctly positioned with reference to the fuel tank, the seat appears to be supported only by the brackets, it doesn't contact the frame anywhere inbetween them. The curvature and assorted recesses in the seat pan seem to be completely arbitrary, and bear no relationship to the shape of the frame underneath.

This all seems rather odd to me. The seat was only fitted to this frame, and only for 1 year, why on earth did they "sculpt" it in this way if it doesn't line up with the frame anywhere?

Am I missing something? Any help, suggestions, photographs and explanations gratefully received.

Paul.

i have the same seat it fits as you describe mine has a home made bracket at the front. the seat doesn't seem the right shape or to follow the line of the frame it just sits in mid air on its brackets . perhaps it was to make it more comfortable allowing it to flex . Baz

Really pleased with mine - it is also the most comfortable seat on any of my bikes

I have been sctching my head re how the seat mounts at the front on my model 7, I beleive in answer to your question re ES2 the front bracket attaches to a casting situated ona casting on the top frame tube and inside the tank tunnel withe the tank attached i think the ES2 rear tank mounts attach to the same casting.

The seat is held and supported by the brackets but so were the standard seats certainly from '56 on. The sculpting is the part I like as it covers the tubes and makes it look complete. The extra width of the front of the seat just improves comfort.

Many thanks everyone, I can now confidently start working some metal for the brackets. If anyone does have an original front bracket and would be prepared to measure it and send photo's that would be marvelous.
