1948 ES2 project status

Forums

Good evening,

Ihave been asked by a few guys to post some pix of my project. Given the picture size limitation on our siteI am puttinglinks to the pixI have posted toPhotobucket.

My ES2 left the factory on 12 Feb '48 when it was shipped to "Deeley of Canada" which was a dealer in British Columbia. I bought the bike from a very nice guy in Saskatoon from picturesthe owner emailed me. Despite a hard life its got matching numbers (important to me) and I'm determined to save her. My wife and bank account are not quite so convinced:

How the project looked when it arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia from it's former home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan this past summer:

After the initial cleanup (July 2012):

I even got a pix of the rear number plate I got from Duncan a couple of weeks back! Lots of other new parts from the NOCShop, eBay, RGM, Norvil, RacingVincent,Andover Norton, and other shops are scattered about.

So far I've focussed my time on learning what I've gotten myself into (Yikes!!!!!), cleaning and bead-blasting, and ordering parts. The frame took a hit at some point. The crankcase, forks, tank, and frame were damaged. I will be sending the frame out for straightening soon. One of the pix shows the motor mounted on the cleaned frame. You can see how far the front downtube is bent because the front engine mounts don't line up with the mount on the downtube.

Hi Byron,

Great job!! Things are rallycomingtogether well on your project. I find it very interesting to see the similarities & differences between your bike & my 1950 model 7 I am puttering with. I see you have a Lucas M01 magdyno . Do you have the dyno, I didn't see it in the pics? If you need a hand on the mag, let me know, I have quite a few M01 mags around the shop. I am near Cleveland Ohio right on Lake Erie.

Hey,

Iwill admit this project was a bit more thanI anticipated it would be but I'm having fun with it. I held out for a '48 because I wanted a forty's bike and I love the look.

Sharp eyes! I am missing the dyno.Think I'll pop into Walmart tomorrow and pick one up :)

I have not even touched the Mag outside of cleaning it up a bit. I know it spins but thatas far as I've gone with it. Thanks for the offer to help. You can pretty much count on me bugging you for info when the time comes. I've set a date of May 2015 to have the project complete (or at least driveable). This works for my family and work schedule, and more importantly my ability to spend the dumptrucks of money on parts that are required. I have an endless list!

Do you have any pix of your project around?

Cheers,

Bryon

Well done Bryon, thanks for sharing the photos, you have been busy with the sand blaster. It takes lots of washing to get it out of all the casings and disasterous if you don't. The parts have cleaned up really well :)

Roger that. Everything is getting a complete strip/clean/assembly!I really like the "finish' left by the bead-blasterbut it traps the dirt big-time. Wish I had a toolbox and front mudguard to clean up :(

Pop into Wallmart & pick one up , thats hilarious !!! I remember as a kid, my Dad had me stick my finger in the mag where the plug wire goes, he said his fingers were too big to fit :) , then he gave it a spin, yeeeeeowwww did that make me jump, over 40 years later ,we still get a laugh out of that one! I see some lads in your photos, maybe one will be the Royal Magneto Tester?

If you have access to a ultrasonic parts cleaner with some simple green, or citris cleaner, it makes short work out of getting the grit out of blasted parts, if not, I used to use a 33 gallon trash can (new & clean) with dishwashing detergent, the kind you put in a dishwasher, not the hand wash stuff. Lots of sloshing & then blow out with air. I usually end up tapping out all the threaded holes to be sure every piece of grit is gone, then more air to blow it out.

I had good luck getting taps & dies from these guys in New York USA: http://www.britishfasteners.com

and also from Walridge in Canada: http://www.walridge.com/

Good luck, keep calm & carry on !

Bigger beads are ok for taking the paint off frames etc but I wouldn't use it on ally or brass as it will rip through it, rounding off corners etc and as you've said, it leaves a rough finish that gets dirt stuck in it. If you've used this on ally, I'd go over it with some fine wire wool and WD40 for a smoother satin finish.

Keep up the good work. You certainly have something to keep you busy on those l o n g

COLD Canadian nights.

Made a little progress out in the shop. Fitted the exhaust which Feked supplied. It arrived this week! Thanks to those that helped me decide where to order the exhaust from. It seems to fit nicely.

Dry assembly slowly continues....

Evening,

It's been some time since I posted anything about my poor ES2.I have been making some progress.

The rocker box, head, and barrel are now complete. I am currently working on getting the flywheels reassembled and trued up as well as trying to determine if i can rebuild the carb or perhaps spend a lot of money on a shiny new one.

I'm still VERY far from the finsh line which is now set at 12 Feb 2018. The old girl turns 70 in 2018 and I'm going to try hard to have her back on the (cold Feb) road to celebrate.

Cheers from Halifax

Hi Bryon,

Unless you have a lot of help it is no use setting a target date, I have found this many times but still do it. Only when you can see the finish line can you do that with some accuracy.

The thing is to enjoy the finished job and never keep track of what you have spent in cash terms or it will ruin your feelings about restoration.

Thanks for your brilliant pictures and I hope you enjoy the bike. Please let us know how it runs.
